Indeed.
It used to be that one could rely on Walmart locations to take these but that's no longer true.
While it hasn't happened to me personally, many people have complained about placing orders then having them cancelled by the store as a means to avoid accepting coupons, so it seems they know when you are using coupons (since it affects their bottom line I would assume they'd know the math)
