Myself I cannot by "Come back here" as it was told to me by my area Firestone's as all my vehicles have enhanced or altered suspensions in there eye's case in point I installed OEM factory adjustable cam bolts in the front of my pickup to correct the camber issues and my tiny crv has rear adjustable camber to fix the well known (just look at pretty much any rear of any suv and you will see the tire's camber is inwards) supposedly this is to help in roll overs all I see it help is in the faster tire wear. And as Firestone states they will not work on modified suspensions wow it ain't like I stuck a 12" lift under there all I did was stick in the manufactured parts they should of in the assembly line. I found it just not worth my time so I take mine to real alignment place it's further buf it's just done right.

* I don't know about now but Pepboys use to do the alignment and adjusted the parts(adjustable cam bolts) even though they knew it was put in after the vehicle was manufactured because they knew it was to correct the problem facing pretty much anything on the road. They use to run specials on their lifetime during blackfriday and other holidays for like $50 off or 129

I'm never in town for new years so I might do this deal.
I don't actually need an alignment at the moment.
Does one actually need to get an alignment or can they just purchase the lifetime service?

You can walk in and purchase the alignment for 1 vehicle and not get the alignment that day. This lifetime saves the heck out of tires. Every rotate and balance I get the tires aligned.

What a scam. I bought the lifetime alignment 4 years ago and every time I have gone they have refused to do it saying I don't need it.

I concur. I have it on both my cars and while it sounds like a good deal, they almost never really do any alignment. Either it is all good or we need to buy new tie rods, or shims etc.

And of course, any repair we need costs arm, leg and a goat sacrifice

Depends on the store and how its managed. If you set an appointment and drop it off, the alignment will at least be checked. If it's not off, no need to adjust anything.

If they give you a hard time, tell them you replaced some suspension parts and want it re-aligned. They can't refuse, and they can't prove you didn't replace something (control arm for example).

Shop should provide an analysis that shows your alignment and whether you're in spec for all parameters. If they fake it and don't do something (when they should), you have the document showing everything was fine. Of course any shop can have a bad apple that does things poorly...luck of the draw.

Lifetime makes sense if:

You plan to keep the car more than ~ 10 yrs
Plan to do any suspension work
Live near and drive on pothole roads

This is not transferable if you sell the car. The cost between a single alignment and a "lifetime" is like $100 vs. $160, so not that big of deal if you only use once.

That has not been my experience. I bought it 4-5 years ago too and take it in every 6 months (Firestone's recommendation). I make an appointment online and like to be the first appointment of that day. I drop it off and walk across the street to my favorite breakfast place and about the time I finish my meal, they text me saying my truck is ready to go. They go over the printed reports stating what the adjustment were made and hand me my keys.. I have not experied any up-sale (I keep my tacoma in A1 shape). In fact, I just bought my GF one for her car.

I agree with both comments above. It totally depends on your store. Bought the lifetime a few years ago and every time I took it to one store, I was either asked why I think I needed it (?) or found something that needed to be done that was expensive. Eventually started taking my car to another location 10 miles away and they always performed the alignment without the before and after hassles. The first store closed down 2 years ago (I'm assuming from folks getting scammed and just not going there anymore).

That's really excessive. Something might be loose in your suspension?

I purchase Firestone alignment and tire balancing for every car I own. I rent a parking space from Firestone for when I'm downtown and it is super convenient to just toss them the keys and let them perform the services while I'm working. They have good, honest mechanics and I've never had an issue.

Nonsensical anecdotal comment. Perhaps you drive on the best roads ever, perhaps you don't drive much. Perhaps your car is not so sensitive to alignment nor tuned for anything where it matters much.

It's a mechanical fact that all car parts eventually die, especially suspension parts made w/ rubber that get knocked around. Control arms get sloppy, shocks get worn...it's a real thing.

I've had plenty of wheels go bald on the inside before they should on various cars with and without alignments. I'm buying new tires so the is time I'm gonna get an alignment right after and try to keep them even throughout their lives

Feel free to tell any mechanic proposing crazy repairs that you appreciate their comments and will consider the advice, then politely walk out the door. There's no rule that you have to take their advice or pay for their service. Perhaps you'll do the repair yourself, perhaps you have your own mechanical that does these things and you prefer them.

Don't let that be the reason you avoid a certain shop. Some shop mgrs push that type of tactic, doesn't mean you have to abide. As long as they do the work asked, you got your $'s worth.
