This is a good deal on the lifetime alignment package and vehicle inspection seems very reasonable.

* I don't know about now but Pepboys use to do the alignment and adjusted the parts(adjustable cam bolts) even though they knew it was put in after the vehicle was manufactured because they knew it was to correct the problem facing pretty much anything on the road. They use to run specials on their lifetime during blackfriday and other holidays for like $50 off or 129
I don't actually need an alignment at the moment.
Does one actually need to get an alignment or can they just purchase the lifetime service?

I concur. I have it on both my cars and while it sounds like a good deal, they almost never really do any alignment. Either it is all good or we need to buy new tie rods, or shims etc.
And of course, any repair we need costs arm, leg and a goat sacrifice
If they give you a hard time, tell them you replaced some suspension parts and want it re-aligned. They can't refuse, and they can't prove you didn't replace something (control arm for example).
Shop should provide an analysis that shows your alignment and whether you're in spec for all parameters. If they fake it and don't do something (when they should), you have the document showing everything was fine. Of course any shop can have a bad apple that does things poorly...luck of the draw.
Lifetime makes sense if:
You plan to keep the car more than ~ 10 yrs
Plan to do any suspension work
Live near and drive on pothole roads
This is not transferable if you sell the car. The cost between a single alignment and a "lifetime" is like $100 vs. $160, so not that big of deal if you only use once.

It's a mechanical fact that all car parts eventually die, especially suspension parts made w/ rubber that get knocked around. Control arms get sloppy, shocks get worn...it's a real thing.

Don't let that be the reason you avoid a certain shop. Some shop mgrs push that type of tactic, doesn't mean you have to abide. As long as they do the work asked, you got your $'s worth.
