The rabbit hole on the series gets pretty deep with Harmony Gold and their aggressive protection of their licensing (which you can look up on youtube.) None of that takes away from the fact that Robotech itself was lightning in a bottle.
A dark hope, is that these sales are to get more exposure and pave the way for the live action movie that has been mentioned for the last 20 years. (Last news was a very, VERY old mention that Tobey McGuire, yes, Spiderman, was interested in the movie.)
Rose covered glasses of nostalgia have me preferring Robotech the Macross Saga over Macross itself. So this deal is pretty tempting.
However, don't let that stop you from watching and enjoying what many would consider an OVA condensed retelling of the Macross series. It's not part of the deal here, but there is a lot of satisfaction in watching the Robotech series and comparing it to the condense 90 minute remake.
