I would not fly Qatar Airways for free. They are a sketchy organization with no semblance of customer service. My elderly parents were once flying LAX -> Destination with a layover in Qatar. Man walks up at the check in desk and claims the Qatar -> Destination leg had been canceled and they need to be moved to a later flight which makes it an 18 hour layover. Put on the spot at the last minute we couldn't do much but accept. I wake up the next morning, and checking on the flights realize that the flight that was allegedly cancelled was never cancelled. I call their support line and provide all the necessary verification information, and the woman has the nerve to tell me "sir, I assure you your parents are safely on their flight to Destination as we speak". I tell her no they are not, as I am on the phone with my father who is sitting at the airport in the lounge with my mother. While I was frustrated I always do my best to maintain my composure and not be rude to support folks as it is usually not their fault, but she changed her tone, got short and rude, and claimed that for security reasons she can no longer provide any information to me since I am not the one on the flight (even though that clearly wasn't a problem when she gathered all the verification information from me and provided me with the initial "assurance"). They knew something was up. My best guess is that they bumped them to last minute board some locals, as the gulf countries are notorious for favoritism (but even if this is farfetched, what they did was messed up regardless of reason). If the flight had been truly cancelled and then reinstated for whatever reason they could have shared that, and it would have been messed up but at least somewhat understandable. However their behavior was definitely questionable. I will never forget the sly face of the person that came out of the back room during check in at LAX and made those changes to the flights. He had a look on his face as he was talking to us that made me uneasy. Had anything happened to them at their age and with their medical conditions I was ready to find him, but thankfully it passed, they made it home safely (albeit a day later) and I just swore them off and promised I'd share my story with anyone that would listen.
