Decent saw, crap stand, though i'm sure it's fine for the non-sliding dewalt saws. I wouldn't trust that stand with the sliders at all and I have first hand experience with it. The rolling saw is a much better product.
"I'm not saying I would do it but if they don't ask for the stand back it isn't that unethical, it is their own stupid fault."
And I responded, "that's not what ethics is".
Ethics - moral principles that govern a person's behavior or the conducting of an activity.
You know you're supposed to give back the free item when you return the paid item. Whether they ask for it or not is irrelevant. Being ethical means doing the right thing no matter what.

What is robbery to one person is a deal to another. If I make $10k/year using that drill/driver I don't care if it is $99/set or $199/set because i'm going to buy it no matter the price so I can get the $10k/year. If you're a broke college student, $199 vs. $99 is huge.
Hell, i've seen people pay upwards of $10k in camera gear to take pictures of flowers in their garden and it's just a hobby to them. I felt bad spending less than $4k and I was making a little bit of money from my photography. Everyone values things differently.
For all of the bleeding heart, morality police squad, I just want to let you know that I returned this saw today. In doing so, I specifically asked the lady if they wanted the "free item" back and she said "NO".
So if I kept the batteries, just because she said she didn't need to open the box, that's okay and not stealing?
The only reason I care about people stealing is because it raises prices for me. Some people seem to think their actions have no impact on anybody else. Some people seem to think these stores don't record an accurate inventory and won't notice when they are missing 5000 Dewalt stands because they gave them away for free. Some people think the CEO of the company will simply take a pay cut to make up for it because 'he makes too much money already, we need to teach him a lesson'.
Next year's stands are going to be 10% more because of this moral debacle, whether you feel it's ethical or not.

Batteries from a kit are not "free items" for you to remove and keep if you take the kit back. Not comparable at all.
Yet it would be the same result if I went in and grabbed either the stand or the batteries and tried walking out without paying. These items aren't meant to be free. I'm sorry, that's just the truth. Taking advantage of generosity is what ruins it for everyone else. As I said, you do you, but make no mistake you are costing the company money which will be passed down to all other consumers.
Apparently you missed the part where I asked if they wanted the stand back. If you returned a mower kit that includes batteries, I am 100% sure if you asked "hey, do you want these batteries that came inside the package back", they would say yes.
So you brought them in together and they told you to just keep the stand and you just walked back out with the stand?

I had the stand in my car just in case they actually wanted it back. But she insisted that they didn't want it. I even said "are you sure you don't want the free stand back?" And she said no.
You bought them together why not return them together?
What's it matter? I offered it as an experiment even though I knew what the outcome would be. If it was required for the return, it wouldn't have mattered if it was in my car or my garage. "No sir, sorry we need the free item back to process this return" is all they would say if it was required.
Why leave it in your car unless your intent is to cheat the system. You don't need to answer that, it's obvious where your ethical boundaries are at. Bragging about being an unethical person isn't the win you think it is
Lol ✌️
