Lol in 2000 you could get a MIA standard with rosewood on sale for 600. Now you're happy to get a MIM with Pau ferro for more. Suckers

I was under the impression Fender stopped using rosewood finger boards (except maybe some custom shop stuff) because it's becoming a rare wood. I own a 1996 Fender Strat with a rosewood fingerboard. Also I have to agree Gibson's are fragile. I remember Buddy Guy telling a story of touring in Africa and they had the guitars strapped to the roof of the vehicle. The roads were so bad all the guitars were thrown back and forth. The Gibson's all broke and Buddy's Strat was fine.
Fender USA guitars still use rosewood. All of the regular production import models switched away from rosewood to mostly Pau Ferro or indian Laurel. Both substitues are significantly worse feeling IMO. If I were to buy an import fender it would have to be a maple fretboard.

Kind of funny that Adorama will sell you a Fender dreadnaught with a hard case for $130 but this $650 guitar comes with a gig bag.
Those cheap fender acoustics are made in China bottom of the barrel beginner guitars. The player series is made in the Fender Mexico plant and is a totally viable profesional grade instrument.

That's exactly my point. This guitar needs a hard case more than a cheap acoustic does.

MiM strats were $400 all day in the early oughts. BTW, Gibson guitars were decent until 2012. PrS is probably one of the best factory made guitars, even with their neck heel changing after 1996. They are still much better buys than either Fender or Gibson, which to this day remain popular solely because of the vintage craze.

FACT: If you go and look at the famous Strat players, (Clapton, David Gilmour, etc.) they have Maple necks.
Plenty of great guys had rosewood on their strats - Blackmore is first name that comes to mind.

This place, Chicago Music Exchange, is not a real big player in the guitar seller's market. Their regular price, no code or discount, is some TWO HUNDRED AND TEN DOLLARS higher than equivalent Guitar Center, Sweetwater, Sam Ash, etc.

Here's the thing to consider for intermediate players .. and this is NOT a starter guitar .. that is called a "Squier", Those are made in Korea. These are made in Mexico and .. they're not bad. They lose me with the "bolt-on" neck which entirely eliminates any "human craftsmanship of a fine instrument" but you may like it. But for intermediate players, it's important what you actually PUT .. YOUR .. FINGERS .. ON. It's the "feel" of a guitar. It's "how" it plays.

Your pecking order is this:

#1: Ebony
#2: Maple (though I disagree but it's a fact)
#3: Rosewood
#4: Richlite (Martin guitars)

This guitar in this deal has a Pau Ferro fingerboard. Now, Pau Ferro is not AWFUL. It's used as a substitute when they run out of Rosewood because it kinda looks like it. It has a 1960 hardness rating. Maple is 1400 and Rosewood is 2400. Now, how *FAST* a neck is, generally, is how HARD it is. The hardness of the wood on the fretboard also makes it easier and smoother to bend notes (though some would disagree with that and tell you Maple and it's softness makes it easier to bend notes)

FACT: If you go and look at the famous Strat players, (Clapton, David Gilmour, etc.) they have Maple necks. To me, it always felt like somebody played my guitar in July after eating a Hershey's chocolate bar. It drove me insane and I can't stand it. Doesn't mean that's right. Means it's my opinion.

Pau Ferro is what's generally used on .. starter .. or intensely cheap .. guitars. Children's instruments, "First Act" and brands like that. Now I just offended 94 geeks who pick their nose and eat Hot Pockets and have never played in front of more than three people in their life so they'll get on here with some intensely embarrassing revelation that makes every other guitar player who reads this thread shake their head, laugh and go to ESPN.com because they've just exposed themselves for all the world to see exactly who they are. It's just they don't know it. And that's the worst part.

I can tell ya in 45 years of playing and headlining tours that crossed oceans, if I go to play a guitar that has a Pau Ferro fingerboard, the first thing that hits my head is, "This is a cheap, shoddy instrument made by a machine that nobody cared about when they designed it or when they built it".

You wanna play fast?

Ebony:

You wanna bend like Gilmour and Clapton?

Maple:

Gig bag? Gig bags are for people who always wanted to play guitar and get the chicks but couldn't be bothered to put in the time to practice. So, they stuff their $650 in to a GIG BAG before they put it in the closet. Where it stays. For 4 years. Before they put it on Facebook Marketplace. The very notation of a "gig" bag is an anomaly. If you are going to a gig, you put your guitar in a case that says "FENDER" in nice script lettering so the other musicians can see what you play.

Or .. another option is:

You could get your head out of your ass and learn this word called:

Gibson
Cherry picking 'facts' to create a narrative, re: Maple Necks + Famous players Gilmour most certainly has played non-maple fretboard Strats. Stevie Ray Vaughn. Jeff Beck. We could be here all day posting pics of famous Strat players with non-maple fretboards.

Pau Ferro is not necessarily 'used as a substitute for Rosewood', it's often chosen for its own qualities. Nor is it exclusively found on low-end guitars. Not unless you think a $3,500 Suhr is cheap and chose Pau Ferro to 'cheap out'.

So much misinformation in your post. Those are but a couple.

Very few professional musicians are anywhere near as much a 'gearhead' as enthusiasts on the Internet playing their keyboards. They choose their instruments because they're tools, they inspire them, give them a preferred sound or experience. Many of them don't know or care much about the finer details vs non-professional, non-touring, non-recording musicians. ;-)

Allow me to introduce you to Jack Pearson (https://jackpearson.com/). He will turn any gearhead's world upside, as one of the best players walking the planet that very, very commonly uses and prefers playing SQUIERs, on stage. Oh, the humanity!

The only recent Squires worth attention are from "Classic Vibe" series; the rest is a lottery.

I have two American Fender jazz basses, both Pau Ferro fingerboards. I have two Mexican P-Basses, one rosewood and one maple. By your standards, the mexican instruments are "not as cheap" as the American ones.

I didn't know Jack, so thanks for sending me down the internet rabbit hole. Your link took me to his page, and frankly wasn't that impressed. Then kept going and wow. What a down to earth master guitar player. And yeah the tone he gets from squier's is nuts. Just proves what we already knew: it's the player, not the guitar. Same thing with practically any instrument or art form…it's not the camera..not the brushes or canvas or paint. A master makes beautiful art from anything.

I had a moment of guitar clarity about 30 years or so ago in a mom and pop music store. A father and his 8-10 year old son came in for a guitar and amp for the boy. I didn't hear all the conversation but I recall the music shop salesman, a talented guitar player then playing in a Motown band with it's own Tower of Power horn section, picked out a 3/4 size Fender Squier Strat and plugged it into a cheap Fender amp. Don't recall which amp but it had to fit dad's very limited budget.

That guitar sang in his hands.

Better components and build quality afford an easier route to the sound you want, but there is no substitute for talent. That kid would not be able to get those sounds out of the Squier when he got home. A lot of learning and practice ahead. But we both saw the potential in that inexpensive guitar.

they, like virtually ever other authorized reseller, sell the guitar with the case, or bag, or without either based solely on how Fender, Gibson, etc. ship it. It's a Fender thing, not Adorama.
