While I think the behavior by PNY should be condemned, 660 TBW is still more than plenty to use as a data drive (i.e. storing games).

2TB version only has 600TBW, this is really low range and looks like switching to QLC.
I don't think QLC is a good choice even for $130.
The original 3300TBW has probably used Toshiba's TLC NAND as this is the only NAND in the market that has such good TBW and this is good for the usage like NAS cache.

I don't trust PNY. Their heyday was in the early 90s, all junk now.

Anyone can confirm they changed their nand to QLC or just dropped their warranty because of chia? I hear both stories and base on their price, I'm more inclined to believe the QLC change so they can offer it at this price.

New to these types of drives. What company had a good warranty? What should I expect to pay for a 2tb drive for my laptop that I won't use for gaming?

As far as typical use this is a great deal for a 2TB drive. As already mentioned, 660TBW is more than enough for the typical use case.

If PNY really changed their NAND without telling anyone that'd be a big deal, going from TLC to QLC is a very big change and would involve a lot of firmware work and requalification work. At that point it's effectively a brand new drive so it's pretty shady of them to keep the same model name.

It'd be easy for them to maintain their performance with a NAND change due to the fact that they have DRAM onboard which means their fresh out of box performance should be, relatively, unaffected by the NAND but your sustained performance is going to take a hit.

Having said that, if there wasn't an "original" XLR8 to compare against, and shady business practices aside, this is still a very good deal for a 2TB drive from a "known" brand.

I ordered it, I doubt I'll ever wear it out. And if I do I'm guessing there will be much better drives available a whole lot cheaper by then. $130 for a 2tb with dram seems like a good price.

I had one of these last year and it performed as advertised but returned it as soon I they changed their warranty to 600TBW. If they can change their warranty anytime they want, that can't be good. Any half honest company won't do that. I can't imagine Apple/Samsung going from 1 year warranty to just 2 months for their products.

Yeah even as the main OS drive it's plenty. I've had my Samsung 960 EVO 500GB since 2017. I've been using it for my work and daily driver over the past 5+ years and according to Samsung Magician I have a total of 36TBW. The endurance is rated at 200 TBW. It will take me another 23 years at my current usage level to hit 200TBW.

Pretty good price. I bought the new Firecuda 520 2 TB last week from the egg for $170.
Better specs, 1.8M TBW and reads at 5,000, almost as good as my Samsung 980 PRO but I paid about $240 for that back in Dec. 2020.

Just note that it's for delivery in November. That's basically two months for you to find a better deal. But if you really want this specific ssd, and can wait a couple months...
