Can anyone recommend a specific tip for ~14 gauge wire for RC/drone stuff? The stock tip can be a little challenge with heat transfer

I got a pinecil a year ago and it replaced my weller soldering station due to its size

I love mine! I've owned a lot of different soldering irons but this is my favorite. Just make sure to buy the sets of tips too, having variety is really nice.

Our community has rated this post as helpful. If you agree, why not thank

As much as I shake my head at "in-stock posts" being considered a legit "slick deal", I will admit this not-on-sale tool is an excellent value.

The soldering iron is extraordinarily capable, very portable, and has open-source software running it. You can reflash your -soldering iron- to suit your needs. In an era of closed-source everything....this is a welcome breath of fresh air.

It's not for extra fine work nor is it for heavy duty work -- but for the casual hobbyist, it's an excellent iron. Small size + easy controls + quick to heat + solid build quality are a solid win. This iron is comparable to an introductory Weller or Hakko desktop model at 3-5x the cost, and absolutely destroys your old Radio Shack firestick irons.

It's worth the asking price.

I would strongly recommend getting the two tip sets offered by Pinecil, as well as one of each of the silicone coated USB-C cables. You'll need a power adapter that can handle the power draw, so if you only have a 12w phone adapter -- look to upgrade. They have a nice multi-port desktop-based power supply, complete with an LCD readout of the power being used.

Or get a high performance + high capacity USB-C battery pack for a truly portable tool.

I would NOT get their soldering stand. That's a flimsy piece of junk. Grab literally anything else to hold the iron. Also, get yourself a silicon repair/soldering mat to work on -- they're able to protect surfaces from high heat.

Lastly -- get some eye protection + a small ABC fire extinguisher. A small fan for ventilation (or a proper fume extractor) wouldn't be a bad idea either. And of course, your usual solder + wick + solder sucker + flux + helping hands + board holder etc.

-----

To put it in perspective, I have a normal sized Plano ammo box w/ removable tray for my soldering gear. And I have it filled with things like pliers, hemostats, magnetic helping hands workstation, stickvise, silicone mat, USB-C battery pack, LED lighting, etc. The soldering iron + all the tips fits in a pencil pouch with room to spare. I have a truly portable DIY workstation that can be stored almost anywhere.

If the ammo case doesn't suit your fancy, get one or two Sterlite shoebox-sized containers.

I got the iron, two sets of tips, two silicone usb-c cables, extra set of contacts, desktop power supply, and the tip stand for $137.

The accessories are very reasonably priced.

Nice, thanks OP, repped! Agree, the prices are very reasonably, even after reading the comment above saying the same thing, I was still surprised once I started picking stuff to add to card. I basically got everything for the pinecil plus the desktop PSU. Also, note that the $12 shipping is 15-45 days via China post, vs. $24 shipping for 5-10 days via one of several express carriers. The extra $12 was worth it for me for sure to have something that is both trackable and here potentially a month sooner.

Definitely depends on what you're trying to do. Pinecil quality is objectively better (open-source, detachable cable, etc) but it's probably not advisable to cheap out on a soldering iron especially if you're using it often or for important projects?

On another note Fakespot gives it a "C" and displays mixed reviews. Take what you will from that.

Not even comparable to this.

This has a processor built in to intelligently solder and runs open source software.

Why would you want to program your iron, you wonder? One obvious use would be protecting delicate components from overheating.

Another one is saving presets.

If you just need to solder random stuff, any old iron is fine. Prob a weller from a hardware store will lost you a few decades. When you really need the good stuff, they can start to really show a difference. I have a lots of irons and my fave is JCB as it melts things like butter instantly, but are out of reach of normal hobbyists.

Ive bought a lot of these new age chinese tools and they all look cool and have revolutionary designs, but are always lacking somewhere in quality and usability sadly.

They are compatible with the TS100 tips. I got one of the top Amazon results for TS100 replacement tip kit and it came with a few rather large ones.
