Thanks again for the reply mat. Completely understand what your saying and the problems you see. My issue is I live in a tri level house and the wiring would be a nightmare if they all had to wire to a central hub (if that is what your referring to specifically). I only want to use wired cameras for power so I feel comfortable with keeping power and can make that work I just wouldn't be able to wire all indoor cameras and any I'm able to get outdoors to one central spot. If you have specific recommendations that would work like that I'd love to hear your thoughts. Thanks!
Hi bcorwin85

Tri Level House .. that gets more challenging ..

Do you own the house?

If so, there are possibilities ..

Is there an attached garage?

If so, you can easily put a few IP PoE cameras from the Garage to the top of the garage doors with minimal work .. and then run a power line adapter to a small poe switch in the garage ..

If you have vinyl siding you can run some cat5e under it ..

Thanks. So in order to use something like blue iris i have to have a PC and not an NVR?
Hi konoplya ..

What is an NVR?

Its a CPU in a box with software .. some have poe ports, some do not.

Not much different than running a PC with VMS software ..

various ways to solve this .. it's up to you which way you want to go.

I guess you're right. So is there a way to get blue iris into NVR then?

Some people are fine depending on police to arrive to help them. Others don't leave their safety on the hands of others.

Same applies here, some people want higher quality video surveillance, etc etc incase they have to use the footage to identify the person or maybe get the license plate # of the video.

Others are perfectly fine with a more budget set up as long as it gets video and scares ppl off with their presence around the perimeter.

edit. I'm on the wyze cams, but this deal made me check out what reolink offers and I'm liking the offerings. will probably upgrade some time in near future

FYI - those new to security cameras .. if you need good low light performance look for cameras that have larger sensors ( in general .. of course there's more nuance to this, but that is a good rule .. )

So far all the Reolink cameras I have seen use more affordable and smaller sensors and do not do well in low light conditions

I mean how much low light do you need??? I guess? Obviously adding a big spotlight would help all cameras, and color night vision cams have thier own light..

But for example its fairly dark out back and i can see idk 60ft easy. Granted youre not making out faces entirely or massive detail in full dark, but i doubt theres much you could do about that outside of spending crazy money..
Perhaps, but if you can't make out faces or capture license plates, how much point is there to having a camera at all?

There is no fiber where I am and cell data is spotty. My Blink cameras are in the box.

FWIW I have a Reolink system. In 3 years I've replaced the DVR twice so I'm on number 3 and it's already not looking good. Reolink quality control is awful. YMMV

I tried a bunch of security cameras and it was pretty clear that wireless cameras are trash compared to wired IP. Signal loss, delayed live views, poor frame rates and resolutions. They provide you the illusion of security but they're all useless.

Had to go IP cameras with high res, then drop it to 1080p to get the frame rate high enough to capture license plates from moving cars. If your cameras cant do that they're pretty much garbage and there wasn't a single wireless cam that could capture the license plate off a moving car (~20mph).

It's also incredibly easy to change the lenses on a real IP cam and get different fixed zoom levels that maintain clarity at high fps.

Here is a good example of a nice 8MP camera with a good sized sensor for low light conditions:

ANNKE NC800
https://slickdeals.net/f/15594583-annke-nc800-acme-4k-uhd-full-color-night-vision-poe-security-camera-with-f-1-0-super-aperture-0-0005-lux-human-vehicle-detection-fs-198-80

From Annke's description:
"The PoE camera offers unparalleled 4K clarity with the pioneering 1/1.2″ STARVIS CMOS sensor. This flagship sensor captures the most authentic colors in every frame, every time. The 2.8 mm lens with an ultra-wide 124° diagonal angle covers a lot of objects, perfect for monitoring large areas."

I believe this is a Hikvision OEM .. so should play well with a Hikvision OEM NVR, or since it should be ONVIF spec, also VMS software like Blue Iris, Milestone systems, .. even other NVRs on the basic ONVIF settings .. ( Reolink NVRs really like Reolink Cameras, so that is a bit of a downside of a Reolink kit .. harder to get non-Reolink to work with it .. )

Quote from konoplya :

VMS Video Management System Software packages are available for various OSes, Windows being the most popular OS for VMS.

So VMS software like Blue Iris basically makes your Windows PC into an NVR. A big benefit of this is you get a faster CPU / processing and more flexibility this way vs a NVR box from Hikvision OEM / Dahua OEM / other .. as most NVR boxes are designed to be as affordable as possible to reduce the cost point to the customer, and often you can hit the bandwidth limit of cheaper boxes if you have many 8MP cameras.

Hi D-Edwardo

With cameras having gotten fairly affordable for the quality of image capture, I would definitely consider getting a couple .. even if just for watching wildlife ..

( many here on SDs have helped me with other topics, this is the one I can help others with in return )

Yes lennonst, this is what I also find out about wifi .. thus why I ended up eventually just accepting that I had to go with a wired setup.

Also, I found having a varifocal camera really is nice for setting the FOV you want ..

Quote from bcorwin85 :

Hi bcorwin85

Lennonst points out another issue which I failed to mention earlier .. in addition to cloud dependent issues, WiFi can also be problematic. ( a lot depends on even the construction of the house / building here .. )

If you're comfortable and want to try a few wired ip poe cameras, feel free to make a post at ipcamtalk put up a picture of the front of your house and tag me ( AT mat200 there .. ) I'll take a look and let you know what I might try to do to get a couple of cameras up.

As I noted, if you have a attached garage at the front of your home, that is normally a great way to get at least a couple cameras to watch the driveway and perhaps walkway up to the front door.

How much does it cost to wire a system like this? I don't think I have the skills to DIY it.
Where are you located (generally)? It somewhat depends on your house or wherever you are installing them. DM me if you want.

Have had this system for over a year and it has already paid for itself. Have caught amazon drivers damaging my lawn by driving on it and have been paid by amazon for the damages. One thing i will say is the motion detection is trash and will tell you person detect when it's raining or if the ambient light changes. Also the 4k option is overkill, the 1080s are probably more than enough for most ppl. Problem with 4k is video files are too big when you have to actually upload your evidence to a third party portal. Overall fantastic product for the price.

Blinks do not record 24/7 if something happens that is outside its motion range guess what? You got nothing. Something can happen on your yard that is 100feet away, good luck with your blink.
