We don't have time machines, so don't expect that pricing again without a snafu at Sammy, so let's not base our opinions on a year ago. . .

In for one. Had to choose black or silver.

Edit: It's a $135 difference to upgrade. I'm curious if it will do the basics without too much trouble. We won't be doing any hardcore gaming or office work or anything like that.

I have not had any issue. I also have a7, and a7 is different story though.

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Device turns on and boots normally
The charging port supports charging & data transfer
All software locks are disabled, accounts are removed, and device is factory reset
The camera works and lenses are undamaged
The screen and body (front and back) are free of cracks
The device is not on a banned list
If you do not send your trade-in device, or it does not meet the eligibility requirements, Samsung reserves the right to disable your New Samsung Product remotely
By clicking on 'Yes I Agree', you agree to the Trade-In Program Terms and Conditions.
Clicking the link for fine print for eligibility says, "e) Your Trade-In Device must not have a damaged or swollen battery. A battery is swollen if your device screen or case begins to warp around your battery and bulges around the center. If your device does not fully charge, if the battery runs hot while charging, or if your device needs to be charged multiple times during the day, it could mean that your battery is damaged."
Later in the terms it says: "• If your rejected Trade-in Device has a damaged or swollen battery, it is unsafe to ship and cannot be returned to you."
So if they determine your battery is damaged, they'll keep it and still give you nothing.
I've personally never had any issues with trading old phones, but the batteries were around 2 year old and were still usable phones. I've read horror stories about trade ins being rejected.
