You have to have some point activity within a rolling 12 months, It can be redeeming for something or adding points. If you catch it shortly after the points are lost Disney support usually will restore the points - once. If you pay attention to the emails from DMI or to threads like the main Disney Rewards one on SD it is fairly easy to have points in the past year. If you only redeem for buying BDs/DVDs or going to Disney movies you can pass a year without realizing it though.

I stopped collecting these points when I had a ton and then they somehow did something that wiped them all out a few years ago. I don't know if anybody else had had that experience.
