FWIW the inventory is broken. Home depot's website says there are none in store and brickseek says that there are none in my area at all. There were at least 3 in that store though.

None in store and only available for special order in the Raleigh-Durham area. Suxors.
Home Depot does do discounts on floor models.. you could check with them once they start phasing out the summer items and see if they will sell you the floor model. I did that for this mower last year and it worked great. Sold two of the batteries to help make it even cheaper.
Our local store has 3 of them but they are still $699. Brickseek does not show that the store has any. It is a clearance item so hopefully it will hit all stores soon.

I bought one of these about 2 months ago to mow my .36 acre lawn since I already have a few makita tools and batteries. The mower lasted around 15 minutes with 2 - 5ah batteries which was only enough for about 1/4 of my lawn. I had to charge and use the batteries 3 more times to fully mow my lawn. The quality of the cut was fine, but the mower would also get bogged down and stall on slightly heavier sections (grass was no more than 2-3 inches high). I returned the mower, and bought an EGO 21" self propelled instead. The ego has a MUCH larger battery and lasts for my whole lawn. It doesn't get bogged down even though I've mown heavier duty with it, and the battery charges quickly. If you're trying to decide which mower to go with, I highly recommend spending the extra money and going with an EGO or something with a larger battery. You can calculate battery capacity by multiplying the voltage times the amperage of the battery. For instance, the makita batteries are 5ah @ 18v x 2 = 180Wh. The EGO battery is 56V x 7.5ah = 420Wh which is over 2 times larger than the makita's.

I recently purchased a Ryobi 40v mower, and Ive had the same experience you had with your Makita: mine always gets bogged down and the batteries do not last near as long as I would expect/hope.
Ryobi gets good reviews. I would say it's probably comparable. Maybe makita has less plastic? I own this mower and it's decent but I think it's true value is about 400. It works well but I wouldn't use it for more than 1/4 acre

My experiance is opposite of this. I only mow less than 1000 SF at a time, maybe 10 min or so at once, but I get get several mows out of (2) 5ah batteries. Probablly minimum 4. I'm on a bit of a slope and only use the auto drive to go uphill though.
Also in higher grass the mower revs up the rpms automatically when it feels resistance.
Batteries alone are almost worth the cost of the mower.
