Why do they bother requiring the trade in? Most of what they get will be junk. Won't it cost them more money for shipping and disposal?

Similar experience. I don't have EDU but normally used to get employer's discount. I clicked the link in OP and it showed $49. I logged into my account and the price went up to $139. Couldn't get it down so I logged out, started over and it was back to $49. Added trade-in for $29+tax and checked out as guest without logging in at all. Received email conformation with correct price. Weird but seemed to work.

you can't be logged in with an account that gets a discount. you have to add it to the cart then login to your account
