I'd say the PENN Pursuit IV is good, I caught one on sale of 20% off ($63.99) at academy once, you can still get ones for $79.99.
Thanks. It is $80 at Academy for the complete combo. Amazon has the III and IV combo for $68... may jump on that.

I use this same 4000 reel on a GX2 Ugly Stick. Works great.

I've caught halibut and annoying heavy stingrays no problem, but that could just be the strength of my Ugly Stick to begin with.

Thank you. Are these options good for freshwater fishing or more tailored towards saltwater?
Dont look at reels are saltwater or freshwater. Look at them based on size of the reel (matched with rod) and type of fishing and expected fish size. Are you fishing 25lb trout in the river or 2lb trout in a stream, or .5lb crappy. I fish the same Battle in fresh and saltwater based on what I am fishing for.

When the striper come in during the runs, its a 7' light rod with a 2500 battle for the shoolies. They are at most 2 pounds. I get to feel the fight in the rod and have fun. When the bigger striper come through, I move to a 3500 size battle and a 7' Medium heavy rod with more backbone. A 2lb schoolie on a MedHeavy rod is like a stick and a gold fish. Feeling the fish is harder on a stiff rod and small fishg. Its fun, but not as much on a light tackle rod. When the bigger fish come in, I want the backbone to fight the fish, and not snap the rod.

The only difference between fresh and salt is that after I saltwater fish, I rinse the reel with freshwater to get the salt off. Salt kills everything. Its the same reel. I have never rinsed a reel I use in freshwater. I just do the same maintenance on the reel yearly. The size is key.

If you are not sure, and buy a battle 3500 with a 7' ugly stick, you will have a combination for life.
