I bought a set of these in the past, still used in the family room, and they work fine, nothing stellar. As for the blue light, it can be fixed fairly easily by unscrewing the bottom and either taping over the light or using some black paint. Takes like a minute to do.

So these things are USB-powered, but the audio still comes from a 3.5 audio jack.

I would lean towards paying just a little more and going with the digital USB speakers for better sound quality, and one less cable.

Something like this... I don't have this exact model but my USB speakers I don't think are made anymore.

I don't trust their products given how many melt and potentially catch fire.
I can't speak to the melting or catching fire instances but can say that the first pair I got, one of the speakers got very hot in a matter of minutes (this was straight out of the box). I got it exchanged for a new pair and it's been working great for the last 2 yrs. Sound isn't going to blow you away but it is loud for the size and pretty clear. I'd definitely pick it up again if I needed a replacement or 2nd pair. Also as people mentioned, you can't turn off the blue light, but it's really not that bad.

This. Speakers that can only use 5 volts max are not going to be very useful. I'd be surprised if they'd even be an upgrade for built in speakers in a cheapie laptop,
These speakers will surprise you. I am jamming to AC/DC - TNT right now and it sounds pretty good. Well worth the price.

These work fine for cheap speakers but do know you have to have it plugged into both the headphone jack and a USB port

If you haven't shopped Woot for a while like me, dig around for their "Congratulations! You ignored us for so long, you've earned $5!" email. Managed to get this for $5 using it. Awesome deal.

I have a pair of these. Good starter speakers for close range listening. You get a lot of sound for the size.

Got mine yesterday. Great speakers for the $$$... unless you expect $100 speakers for $10.

- Got these in yesterday.
- Both speakers are decently heavy. The blue light looks nice, imo.
- Sound quality is decent, especially for the $10 price. I have them hooked up to my laptop.

That's what I thought at first too, then over time they became bothersome and I wanted the lights gone.
