I started the TV show, but felt it was slow. Then stopped and haven't been back. Keep hearing how good it is so I might give it another whirl.

One of the reasons the show can take three or four episodes to get into is that the characters are "whole" people; they're complicated. They do good things and bad things, and there's no indication of whether you're supposed to like them or think they're awful. You're left to make those judgments for yourself, and 12 different people would probably have 15 different perspectives on them.
The best part of the series imo is the theme of showing the best and worst aspects of humanity alongside one another. We can move ships fast enough to settle people out in the asteroid belt near Jupiter, but living there is some hardscrabble settler business. People on Earth no longer have to work for a living (there aren't enough jobs to go around for 30 billion people), but living on the government's basic assistance (food and supplies only, no money without a job) is a terrible life in other ways. Like the more that changes, the more things stay the same!
Highly recommended!
The short stories definitely stand on their own. You don't need to be familiar with the main books to follow the short stories, though it would help if you do.
