Based on that and considering the cheaper options available
1) Boost mobile has a $1 sim for a 1 month trial with 5GB data. Note that you do need to provide a credit card for buying, and some jumping through the hoops to get your account number and pin for porting out.

Or you can get the 3 month 15 GB plan from Best Buy for $15; avoids providing a credit card, but you still have to manage the account number and pin.

2) Ting $1 sim from Target (and possibly Best Buy) with $30 credit.

Use a virtual card (if your credit card provides, or if you have service on privacy). Sign up for the flex plan ($10 for UTT + $5 per GB). Wait 1 / 2 days to confirm that the $30 credit is added, if you port out before that's added your credit card may get charged for 1 month. Porting details are available through your online account.
3) H2Owireless offers eSIM and paygo plan with $10 refill; 90 days validity, you need to contact CS to get your port out details.
4) There are some sellers on eBay offering port numbers; prices start at $5 if you're buying multiple (10 or so); or around $8-10 for singles. Haven't tried it, others may be able to comment. On occasion I've also seen members here and on reddit comment that they have numbers available for a price.

Maybe when was the number ported made the difference. I ported my number a couple hours before the bill was generated but on the same day. After porting, I had chat, an agent assured me that the porting was done successfully, the credit would be applied to my account, the balance should be adjusted to 0. But it turned out not that, even though the free 3 month credit listed on my account but the balance still showing full amount as of today.
I activated my phone on the 7th but did not port the number until early morning of 9th. My account shows the credit was earned on 9th, the same day the statement came out.
I am guessing if the free 3 month credit was not earned and listed on the account before the billing statement being generated, Fi's system could not apply the credit automatically. This is just my guess though.

If I look at BILLING > FI SAVINGS it does say "4 months free" but it doesn't list which lines it applies to.
