Most reviewers (I think America's Test Kitchen did a good video on this) say D5 is overkill and actually has undesirable heating characteristics (takes longer to heat up with no benefit and costs much more) compared to D3.

This is a good deal, the last deal with a 10-pc with D3 set was for $490 last year in April, I don't think prices will drop further ever for a D5 set.
You can try and piece together your own set if you just happen to snag seconds when on sale but that can be hit or miss

I am actually looking for something like this but why would I go allclad when I can get a larger set sub 300 from tramontina

...and it is getting favorable reviews

I got the cuisinart multiclad pro set, seems similar to this set you're considering when amazon had it on sale for $190. I don't know all aspect that would make the allclad better but my set has hold up wonderfully for couple year. I also use other brand like Misen which is right now even more expensive than cuisinart and they are pretty much the same. I think they are going to last me years so for the money i spent, i do not regret going to smaller budget brand.

Depends on the cooking, the Tramontina is rated upto 350F while the All-Clads are up to 500F
glass lids are cheaper to make but are not as temp proof (or as durable) as steel, its why professional kitchens use steel lids

I've been eyeing up this set for awhile, Costco has the 13 piece set for $899 and the D3 for $699 - they also have the non-stick set for $319 which is tempting (I think that sale ends soon).

Any opinion on the copper infused ones?
I have kirkland copper bottom set. And analon as well - steel and anodized sets. I cook Indian and Italian food and I love the copper ones - the dish heats up evenly, rarely chars unless you want it to and very easy to clean up.

I don't think Costco (USA) is selling the kirkland one but Canada might. I got tired of waiting for allclad to become affordable, so went ahead with abalon nouvelle and kirkland brand sets.

I totally agree with this. I've cooked with many types of pot and pans and bought the cuisinart multi clad pro set when it was on sale for <$200 a few years ago and it is awesome. As long as you know how to use the pans properly and clean/care for them, they'll last just as long.

Thanks.. in practical terms, the higher temps would be addressed by a dutch oven type pot. I'm not sure what else I would do at up to 500. Also, glass lids should be better insulators, so more efficient. See through seems like a plus. Durability probably not so important as my house cooking is definitely not at the volume of some pro kitchens, nor do I juggle with pots for added thrills or entertainmentSmilie
