Good book, but sort of weird. Will be interesting to see how the movie turns out. Finished it a month ago, but every time I see a Halloween decoration spider, I think of it doing "Jazz Hands".
This is one of the best audiobooks I've ever listened to. I wanna say it won 'audiobook of the year' somewhere as well. Its pretty long too so it helps to listen at 1.25 speed too....
To those who read this book, the first paragraph of the top review on Amazon says:
"I'm half way through the book and I'm super annoyed with two aspects of the author's approach. First, he gets preachy about global warming, which is not a thing one does when one wants to engage an audience..."And just like that another climate denier is born." Can he be more condescending and dismissive?"
Do you agree with it?
I just finished the audiobook this weekend. He does bring up global warming, because it's kind of important to what's going on. It's not the plot or anything, but it does play a part in why certain things are the way they are in the story. I'd call myself "sensitive" to people who are preachy about climate change and I didn't think the book came across as preachy at all. There is a character who *is* preachy, but he's also kind of portrayed as a hippy and not very likable. I think the topic is mostly just put in there as "this is a fact of the world" but then he just goes about explaining how they're going to deal with that fact in the context of the story.
Great book, by the way. The "elevator pitch" summary would be almost identical to The Martian (an engineer is stranded out of contact with Earth and must struggle to stay alive and solve problems) but it had some really fun elements to it. The story was great, and the audiobook was very well done.

He writes science-based fiction books. He doesn't intend for people who hate science to read the books. It's not like there are two sides to global climate change. It's not a debate.

Thanks for the feedback. I bought it via Google Play Books.
First, the story was very entertaining and if you are in to science, you'll love it. I think the audiobook is easier to follow, especially when discussing some of the experiments and the reasoning behind them. I'd find myself having to reread paragraphs to follow some of the discussions. I thought the concept of first contact was presented in a unique way and it made for some interesting "conversations" between beings. I wasn't put off by climate change discussion, everyone has an opinion and science can be shaped to support either position. Just take it for what it's worth in the context of the story. Overall, a great story that was similar to "The Martian" in it's underlying theme of using science to survive but different enough that I didn't feel like I was rereading a book. I'd recommend it.

As far as the deal goes, it is a good deal.
