Both 30lbs. bags I bought last post Labor Day had several rocks in them. I also found a welding rod, plastic wrap, and fiberglass. Not even a Western lump bag had this much debris inside. I found several pieces of unfinished boards that weren't properly burned into coals.
I'll go back to using El Diablo lump from Costco which IMHO is better in quality and less sparky.

Thank you for the input. I wish I was near a Costco I would certainly give the El Diablo a try.

Check this site out. Everything you need or ever wanted to know about lump charcoal.

I've learned lump can be radically different brand to brand and it is not uncommon to find odd things in many of the brands. Though others seem to be more prone than others. I think it is common enough that I will probably be sorting through it no matter what brand I'm using.

Yep, that's the go-to site for those in the know.

Avoid Western like the plague, no junk but a chemical smell.

Here's Diablo pricing, more slick IMHO. Dang, gone up ten bucks!:

Never had any problems with RO, but OOS by me. Maybe the occasional pebble but that's it.
Picked up 3 Masterbuilt instead (all they had) from the OP's other post. Only going to set it on fire anyway, and anything's better than briquettes!

I've heard with RO is that you get less debris with the smaller bags, more with 30lbs. bags...
