I live in the woods on a pond. Ants (& mosquitoes) are just a fact of life here. I also have parrots. So I have to make sure there's no pesticides being tracked around, whatever pest control I use.
Orange essential oil is amazingly effective in keeping the big floor cages ant free. In the worst parts of the season I wipe a ring of it around on the base of the cage & it works like a charm. They really don't like it for some reason.
