The Yen is dropping big time vs the dollar, so your exchange rate should be advantageous.

I am experienced solo budget international traveler. However, I haven't been aboard since the pandemic. Japan is the one remaining country on my bucket list. My question is what is a reasonable daily expense budget these days for Japan? I'm thrifty and comfortable with low rent accommodation but I do want to be able to afford seeing the major sites and visiting different parts of Japan.and exploring the cuisine somewhat. Assume I would be staying 4-8 weeks.

Thanks in advance.
$35-$45 per night gets you great location business hotel. Food is cheap af for U.S. city standard. Just check that exchange rate. Same meal of 2000 yen(decent meal) that was $20 usd in 2019 is now just $14. And trust me you don't need 2000 yen to have high quality and tasty food. Many stuff are less than half of that. Jiro style ramen can be had for like 850 yen for example.

It goes on and on. Japan is among the very best countries in the world for solo budget traveler. You must go.

I didn't find Japan to be overly expensive. Comparing to $2500/night for Marriott in Vermont Japan is a walk in the park.

Wait, what?! I thought business hotels in great locations in Japans were more like $4-$6 per night. Did the prices skyrocket to $35-$45? EEK!

P.S. Bummer, looks like you are right. Maybe covid?

AFAIK *expedited* processing is working within norms. I have heard people getting expedited in as little as a week. It's the non-expatiated, regular service that has a very wide variation in processing time.

BTW I get my information from following reddit /r/passports where they have a small but dedicated group of people who track such things.
Thanks! I appreciate the info!

..Now I just need to stop hesitating and just bite the bullet to book this darn trip.

Visajourney forums have been very helpful as well to track timelines for passport processing

Protip: Feeling adventurous? Use agoda.com to advance book cheap stays at love hotels during off-peak times. Sometimes, you can score some pretty luxurious rooms with ceiling mounted mirrors and really interesting "gadgetry" included for less than the price of a ryokan or capsule hotel.

Man I've been dreaming about traveling to Japan. Has anyone ever solo traveled there (male young adult if it matters), have no friends to go with! Never solo traveled before
1. Get the train maps. Figure out how to decipher and use the system. Get the train card. Load it up with a few days worth. Suica in Tokyo, but mostly compatible across regions.

2. Visit the Tourist Information Centers!
Tons and tons of nice guides, maps, and importantly all the must see and to do by season/month. No need to work or struggle figuring out if you've missed any must-sees.

You can use these to plan out days in advance to really pack in the fun. E.g. The guides usually have a day plan, you can pick and choose from then schedule it in hour by hour or morning/afternoon/night.

E.g. Shinjuku morning, shibuya afternoon, yoyogi night.

Even if you don't get to the next scheduled thing because you want to spend more time at the current one, it'll give you an idea over the days/weeks on vacation what's left to do.

3. Suitcase or big duffle for the clothes etc, a roller model recommend because you'll often be rolling them here and there. And a backpack, preferably black/dark gray so it doesn't stand out as much for the day outings.
Ie. You might go from sunny to suddenly flash storm within a day, so you'll want the waterproof jacket/small umbrella in the pack.

Plus, you'll quickly learn a) there's fewer public trash cans than in other countries, so you often might need to hold onto that lunch tray long enough to get to a can to dump it b) it is a pain carrying shopping bags of stuff you've bought around during the day before you get back to the hotel.

3. Nokia Here Maps won't work (no idea why they still have got China and Japan maps).
Google maps only if online or you've downloaded a region.
Yahoo Japan Maps/Mapion only if you understand Japanese.
A good Open Street Maps app that has Japan you can download to the phone.
You might not have a connection to the internet, so offline maps recommended.
You typically won't go so far into the forest you can't find your way back, but Tokyo in general is a PITA to navigate without a map because it's totally like a mass of tangled cables for the streets once you wander away from the main streets.
At minimum, compass app on the phone if not a gps tracking app that can let you drop / save home base before you wander off to explore the city.
For me, a basic casio compass watch worked with a printed map well enough.

4. Basic shortlist of travel phrases.

Asking where the toilet is is a total new experience using Japanese, and sometimes you've got no time to fiddle with the phone translation app.

Even a show and point book on Japanese works. Just say "sumimasen" (excuse me) and point at what you need to say.

Pray they know just enough English to tell you clearly enough what to do next.

5. Stick to the big areas like Tokyo Station, ginza, shibuya, etc at first. That'll get you acclimated, still having McDonald's and 7-11 nearby, and sufficient numbers of English speaking staff to keep you from feeling like you've landed among aliens. There will be so many foreigners in these areas, won't be hard to find someone at the bar, clubs, etc to chat to in English.

Wander off later to other areas that don't speak English much at all anywhere once you've gotten the hang of asking for the toilet, basic directions, using the train, etc.

6. Expect a shitload of walking up and down the cities. Your calorie burn can be so much exploring 9 am to 11 pm that you'll be eating 2 Big Mac meals for dinner and still have room for more.

7. Which means nice new athletic shoes.
You don't want crappy old ones turning your feet into burning hell because you'll be walking a ton.
Hiking boots like the mid cut Salomons with super cushy insoles worked well for me, especially with the heavy rains.

8. It's generally very safe.
But, if you come across the very pushy night club guys calling you over to do in for a drink, sexy massage baths, etc., just avoid and turn around/go around/escape or simply expect things to get very expensive, very fast.
(You can be charged crazy $$$$ bills in those types of clubs for a few drinks.)

9. The hot baths are HOT!!!
They're used to the temperature, but you might not last more than a minute. Don't push yourself to stay in longer because the boys downstairs can...well, be hurt.

10. Make sure you ask clearly what to do etc before creating a mess.
They'll generally take the time to explain things etc, but if you just go all Heck, I'll just wing it and jump the tracks to get to my train a few platforms away rather than walk the long way, they'll take you in fast. (Unlike Italy where the onlookers shouted and applauded.)
Think I ought to be on good behavior and you'll have fun.

11. https://www.hostelworld.com
Works nice enough to book cheaper "backpacking" solo guy cheap at places you'll often meet tons of solo types.

Not fully open. Requires 3 needles or a test.

Thailand is fully open 10/1. No needle or test needed.

Business hotels were never $4-$6. Low side is $40 off season or if you are lucky.

I went solo before as a single male by myself and I love it. I used to think it's odd doing a solo trip but I like it more now then going with someone else I can do whatever I want and stay somewhere as long as I wanted. My ticket on Air Nippon from LAX non-stop to Narita was $435. Japan is awesome, very safe. From Osaka, I took an Air Busan (low budget Korean) airline to fly in Seoul for a week.

The Asian low budget airlines are much much better than the American ones. There's no comparison. It puts Southwest and JetBlue to shame plus the flight crew are better looking and respectful. None of those 30-50s year old haggard flight attendants we use in the US.

Traveled solo in Nov 2016. Public transport is phenomenal. Anywhere to anywhere by train or bus. Awesome to explore cities on foot. Just have Google translate ready. Fall colors in central Japan in Nov are to die for. Visited Kyoto, Kanazawa and Mt.Fuji along with the bamboo forest at Arashiyama. No issues at all going solo. You will need to secure your rail pass from here before you go. Get a SIM too while you're at it. Probably the best solo trip I have done. This is too tempting to pass
Why rail pass needs to be bought in advance? Why not just buy it on the spot?
