The yen was bouncing between 73-78 to the dollar while we were there, no reason to pay full USD when you can get like 20-25% (or more) once you land

Hm....maybe you should get the 2nd booster shot. that would make it three and you would be covered for Omicron.
When you travel WITH someone, you have to focus on them only, and miss the other 99% of people that are all around you.
Whether flying solo or with friends you're bound to have a good time. There are lots to do from exploring to attractions to all kinds of food just in Tokyo alone.
Also, make sure you check what week is Golden Week in Japan. A lot of places are closed and you'll see that most of everything kind of shuts down.
