dot4 can be added to dot3, but not the other way around. dont add dot3 to dot4.
the easiest way to find out which dot your car takes is to look at the brake fluid cap.

I'm fairly anal with car maintenance, so I keep logs of all the service I do and also put the dates on the fluid bottles.
He tested my 1 year-old bottle of brake fluid and it was bad. It was half full, only used once or twice and stored in a garage cabinet in a not very humid part of California. And yet the fluid in the master cylinder of my 10 year-old car still tested fine.

So, unless you open brake line as part of the job (replacing caliper, for example), I do not see any reason to bleed brakes. If you do not bleed brakes after opening line, then, yes, you're asking for trouble. But if the hydraulic system remains closed...
2. NEVER use a vac. bleeder on the calipers; it can suck air into the calipers because the seals are not designed for this.
3. ALL cars should have fresh fluid put in on a regular basis if the car maker says so; and, all of them do AFAIK.

I had to redo one car because I kept expecting the color change to be obvious and ended up with air in the lines. (I was doing it by myself and didn't notice the reservoir was getting empty.)
Any experts care to tell me what I should look for besides color change?
Thank you.
