This uses a heating element which is the cheapest line of rice cookers they make. The best line uses induction which makes superior rice. The induction models are made in Japan and the ones with heating elements are made in China.

The Japanese models don't typically go on sale but they range from about $150-$250. I bought the Zojirushi NS-WAC18 from SD about 6 years ago and it just died. That model is made in Japan, 10 cups, and I paid $112 on sale at Macy's. They are about $160 now.

Kohls may have a sale in October.
I waited a couple years and finally bit last October on the japanese induction. But it required a Kohls card for the big discount. Things may have changed since then. $250 for the NP-HCC18XH. Definitely worth it for me and the fam. Do not look forward to spending a lot on an eventual replacement bowl.

Not made in Japan for that price is absurd. These were 100-120 multiple times a year ago.

How can you tell which ones are made in Japan? Just started looking into rice cookers

EDIT: Ah on Amazon at least it says in the "about" section that it's made in China.

What's the difference between the Japanese vs Chinese version? I'm guessing quality at the least, but what else?
