Great little reel.

I've been able to pull in some Durado and some yellowtail up to 15 lbs on these. If you ever caught a yellowtail you know how hard a 15 lb fish can pull. It took me around the boat 4 times with this setup, not ideal but I did land the fish. It's fun, but if your going for bigger game fish I recommend something better. Perhaps a Penn Fathom 25 or higher with 2 speed

Nice, were you running a 6000 sized reel? I agree that conventional or large baitcaster reels are the way to go on the bigger fish (especially yellows and dorado) and particularly if you're on a sportboat. If you're on a private boat or perhaps a kayak with more room to work with, spinning gear is OK. To me it just feels heavy and cumbersome though - I generally prefer conventionals/large baitcasters when targeting larger fish offshore.

That said, pretty decent deals here on Penn Battle reels. The Battles are great for saltwater and should be good for pier, shore/surf and jetty.

In this particular case yes. It can be annoying if you catch big fish on light hear on a boat like that. I didn't intend to catch the yellow, it was just on the same patty I was fishing. I'd never use this reel to catch a yellow. It was more for fun because I had hit my durado limits and I wanted to fight a durado a little longer. I was given them to people who hadn't hit their limits yet.

I was on a boat once and this dude hooked up on a triple digit Blufin, he fought it for over 2 hours and then lost it. He was on a super light setup and didn't want help from anybody. We all had to sit there and wait for him. Don't be that guy

LOL nice - definitely a surefire way to piss some people off but usually if you have no clue what you're doing Wink I can see how with spinning gear you can have a little more fun particularly after getting limits. Sounds like you're down in SoCal as well? Which landing were you going out of?

I actually tried to book with Davey's Locker with a friend but they canceled the trip we planned because a group chartered the boat that day so we got pushed out. We had purchased a Groupon so I'm *sure* they give those lowest priority when it comes to any trip. Not sure if I'll be able to get out and I'm really not as motivated to for whatever reason. I'm sure I missed some of the best action of a lifetime...oh well

I love davey's Locker. I love in Tustin and that's the closet to me. I also go out of San Diego, long Beach, and 22nd street a lot. Sometimes we charter the entire boat or just get a 4 pack and captain it on our own.

I go out of a private boat with 15 people on a 3 night 4 times a year also out of San Diego and we usually kill it

I just ordered a 3000 for fresh water striper fishing on Lake Murray, SC. Coincidentally, just today I pulsed one of our lake's top fishing guides for a spinning reel recommendation, and he said the Penn battle lll 3000. Perfect timing for this deal!!
