I bought the 1TB during the last $119 sale. Like the reviews state, it runs hot. Idles in the 40s. Mine is installed between my GPU and CPU (top slot). After gaming, HWInfo shows upper 60s, and the other temp sensor has peaked in the low 70's. This is with my MB's preinstalled M.2 heatsink and thermal tape. Although I'm probably OK, I bought an Acidalie heatsink to replace my motherboards to see if temps could be tamed. SK Hynix's website says Op Temps are 0-70.

In contrast, my Firecuda 530 drive runs 12 degrees cooler on idle and stays in the 40's during the same gaming session.

Both are very fast. You likely won't experience any major speed difference. KC3000, 980 PRO, 530, 850, 850X, P41 … all are top class. Get what's on-sale. I'd buy another 530 over the P41 purely for temps.
Re: Future Proofing. This ^.

I just went through the same situation deciding what to buy for a Gen 3 XPS. I thought I'd buy a Gen 4 to "future proof", but heat seems to be an issue for most Gen 4s. If the 530 is cool(er), then it's a possibility.

If you definitely want cooler, buy the previous Gold P31 version, which is what I ended up doing. I've had it for a few days, but haven't installed it yet. All reviews said it was efficient and cool, which is what's important to me.

Speed? Specs are often just noise that get in the way of making intelligent decisions. People can't tell the difference between SATA M.2 SSDs and PCIe SSDs, so 95% of the time you'll never notice anything between Gen 3 and Gen 4, and that includes gaming...
People use specs or don't use specs to "talk their book" so to speak. Confirmation bias on both sides of the spectrum.

The P41 does not have a clear advantage over others like the P31 did. So, it is hard to justify a premium over other name brand - Kingston, Seagate, WD, etc who have great Gen 4s and beat Sk Hynix to the market with latest high-layer NANDs.

Gen 4s typically run hotter than Gen 3s when max performance is extracted and so not great for laptops unless heat conduction is built into the laptop for SSDs or the storage is not taxed much (no gaming, long duration media processing, etc). A heat sink is recommended for PS5 and a good airflow essential in Desktops.

But that is not to say 4th Gen is irrelevant or not much advantage over 3rd Gen. The effects are more subtle, like 120hz screens vs 60hz screens. You might be perfectly ok with the latter but once you have used the former, you notice the difference over time. It isn't a wow factor. Assuming you have Gen 4 slot, you will definitely notice it while copying large files. If you have marginal memory say 8GB or you do a lot of multi-tasking, the Gen 4 will make the computer a bit faster because the paging will be faster. Gen 4 advantage starts to show up for any transfers over 32MB or so. Windows can do larger page sizes than than that.

A few things that lead to this. Gen 4s tend to use latest controllers and NAND over Gen 3s that may make a difference in performance. Throughput is just one spec. There is also the latency and IOPs in performance and other factors like durability. Offsetting this is the heat factor. So, broad conclusions between Gen 4 and Gen 3 are silly. Choose what is better for your use now and how long you expect it to last that way.

And finally, what is the premium of Gen 4 over Gen 3.

I have 2 of the Gen 3 drives and they run great. Always at the very top of the benchmark comparison tests. The one in my laptop runs fast and cool, even without a heat sync. As much as I would love to put a Gen 4 in my newly built system to see the Benchmarks, I find absolutely no other need for it Frown Hopefully the Gen 3 drops down into the $60 range as the Gen 4's are becoming main-stream.

As a rule, no but it is not rigid so it is a hit or miss. Try a chat, explain you wish to return the purchase and buy again at a lower price unless they can do a price difference adjustment and ask what they suggest. Don't be surprised to hear either way and do as suggested. Just don't get into an argument.

For items that are available for a limited time or likely to run out of stock, I just buy again and return. Returning it to the nearest Whole Foods for almost immediate refund to online account is easy enough.

Of course, if you are type that destroys or throws away item packaging within 30 days, then you don't deserve a price match. Smilie

I recently bought the Gen 3 gold and installed it in my X1 Yoga. I assume I won't be able to tell the difference if I replace it with this one… in addition, does this version create more heat compared to Gen 3 gold? Thanks!
The Gen 3 Gold is the coolest running nvme ssd that I'm aware of... I'd stick with it for a laptop. I have one in my Asus G752V, and it runs great for everything, including gaming...

The Kingston KC3000 has been the deal to beat at 2tb; for at least the last month, it has regularly been on sale for $184.99. According to this article, we should be able to expect even better prices over the next couple of months:

More than likely they'll ask you to buy it at the lower price and return the first one... which I'm sure costs them more at the end, but they like to stick to their policies (you may find a CSR who may give you some courtesy credit, but that's about it).

If you are buying this for a laptop, just don't. Get the Gold P31 Gen 3 drive. Those are the gold standard for a good, efficient laptop drive. If you are putting this in a desktop with good cooling, it will fly but the P41 runs hot.

Good for video editing?
Not really needed for it. Can be used for it, but Gen 3 Drives are pretty much just as good, especially if you are just starting out if you need to save some money Smilie
1080p, 4k, 6k, 8k timeline? What editing program? Complex color timing? Deniose? h.264, h.265, Prores, raw, GOP, intra frame? Threadripper PRO 5995WX, AMD Ryzen 9 5950X, i9, i7, or Celron? DDR5 or DDR4? 3090 Ti 24GB or 3090? Multicam?

Just something to dip you toe in the water or do you want to future proof?

Plenty of people edit on Gen 3 just fine. But your bottleneck will really depend on all your components and what you are ingesting and exporting.

Check out these guys...

Read the comment section as well. They interact and give their honest opinions. They don't seem too fussy about PCIE 3 vs 4. But I just glanced through it.

How much better was the Acidalie heatsink for you? I remember seeing a video review that it does really well.

Is this [kingston.com] the drive you are referring to? If so, is it a better deal than the one from this thread?

$185 vs $208 answers itself. This one does better in benchmarks except for a few metrics but the differences are negligible amd within variances one might see of fhe same card in different rigs.

Amongst the top tier drives - Kingston KC3000/Renegade Fury, WD SN850, Samsung 980 Pro, Seagate Firecuda 530, SK Hynix P41, it is fine to just go by price, warranty handling differences.

Thanks. I am looking for an NVME 2 TB drive to put in an external enclosure, and later on, in a new desktop I plan to build in a few months. I might actually go with the Kingston drive.

One question though. What about Gen 3 vs. Gen 4? Both this KIngston KC3000 and the Hynix P41 seem to beGen 4 PCIe drives whereas the P31 is a Gen 3 drive. Is that correct?
