You definitely could. With a NAS you're basically paying for the form factor and their software. It would be difficult to fit 5 hotswap drives into a mini-ITX form factor but if you did, XPEnology would do you wonders
I have the same issue you do, which is why I never sleep with a Nas in the same room, particularly because the harddrives make constant drilling sounds but this for the most part this is quiet if you get SSDs.
If using for backups/data preservation, I would avoid SSDs. HDDs usually fail slowly with warnings, giving ample time to transfer the data to a new drive, but SSDs will often die without any notice.
I imagine SSDs have improved in reliability since I took my computer hardware course back in ~2017, but the core principle still stands.

I already have 2 Synology boxes but was in the market for a DX517 to expand my 8 bay. The reason I ended up with 2 is that a 1019+ went on sale for about as cheap as a DX517 last time...and here I am again.

I've been waiting to pull the trigger on the 1522+, however this deal and the integrated graphics sold me (Plex). Now to stalk hard drives that are NOT from newegg
Me to same use case what drives are you eyeballing
I got the DS920+ last time for $450. Other than the extra bay, is this an upgrade?
I would agree the hard drive is the noisiest part of the machine. The 2 WD Red Pro that is in my machine is pretty noisy. I probably should have gotten the Plus if I wanted it quieter (Pro 7200rpm vs Plus 5400rpm).

1 extra bay and the memory is maxed out already to 8GB
black friday came early!! nice timing too for the people that got the 18tb WD nas drive deal.
the DS920+ is decently quiet when its not under load. when it is.. you can hear it but its not loud. synology has been a much better experience over qnap for myself.
Do the drives ever sleep/stop spinning, or do they run 24/7?
I don't mind noise when it is in use. I only access my NAS maybe 5min per day. With the QNAP the drives spun 24/7, which was annoying. I don't have a basement or a good place to stick the NAS, so constant noise become an issue.
Nas going idle is dependent on the drives having activity on them and what you set your standby timer to. You can set a sleep timer in synology but I'm almost certain you can do that in any nas. Pretty sure you just didn't have it configured properly
As someone who is trying to get into setting up NAS, this vs the 920+ or 220+ (other than number of bays, i can live with 2 as well)? My usecase would be pihole plex data and time-machine backups. Also, when is transcoding needed? I play a lot of mp4/mkv files...thanks

Transcoding is only used when watching movies off site out of your local network. For instance trying to watch a 4k movie on your phone on a train ride. I have a 918+ with a full library of 4k mkv rips and it will transcode and play my movies just fine. Ive had this machine for over 4 years now with 4 10tb drives and it's still running strong. I mainly use it as a plex server. I have well over 1k movies between my 1080p and 4k movies.

Would love to get a NAS like this to run alongside the NUC but it'd likely run me close to $1000 after adding drives
