I've had two previous models of this same line, and they're great. They're just okay for gaming but if you're a serious gamer go for higher refresh rate and lower response time. For office productivity and watching any movies/videos, it's great and has excellent colors.

Text clarity is fine. These are not stretched resolutions, so the text clarity is exactly the same as any other 1080 res monitor at a slightly smaller than 27" screen's vertical size. You just get more pixels on the side of what's normal with ultra wide screens. It is easy for me to read text on all day.

29" ultrawide is similar to 24 inch 16:9 and then 34" ultrawide is around 27" equivalent

I'm surprised, I spent the same BF 2016 for the 29UM68-P, which seems to be identical panel (freesync, same contrast, Hz, etc) just plus a built-in speaker. I guess monitor prices haven't budged on in some aspects.

If this is the same panel, I think it's brilliant for the money. Still looks great with zero dead pixels 6 years on. I haven't looked at true gaming monitors in a while so I'm sure this thing is way outclassed in that regard but not bad for some gaming.

How is text clarity on them? I know a regular monitor at 1080p can start to look like crap at 27"+ due to low pixel density. I know the dimensions of ultrawides are different, so maybe it's not a problem at this size? 27" 1440p is what I use, but looking for a monitor for my mom for home office work.

i do not think so. i think DP Alternate Mode implies it can't be used for charging (i have a similar LG monitor and that's the case).

DP-alt mode is technically an independent spec and is not mutually exclusive with power delivery. Though I think you are trying to say it only mentions DP-alt mode without mentioning PD charging means it is an intentional omission.
