The biggest downside to using it in exhaust mode for me and a good fraction of the country is that negative pressure in your home draws up radon gas (through the normal cracks in your foundation.) I own a radon monitor that takes accurate readings hourly and can see a large difference (almost to the danger zone) when we have windows open or closed for weeks, and when we have slightly negative pressure in the home due to exhaust fans being on.

Typically whole house fans are placed in a central location (upstairs if two story). The idea being that you then open windows when cool outside and the cool air is drawn in. With this application, you're limited to a bedroom or kitchen window, but premise is the same. You would open other windows and air would be drawn in.
What about rain and bugs, dust etc flying in?

Same here. Then winter time I remove it. Easy peasy.
