Thumbs up for maybe the cheapest possible way to get a full fly fishing setup. That being said, I'm not sure how forgiving or friendly these rods are to cast and I can add that the cross water reel is the worst reel I've ever used. It jams, pinches line, barely fits any backing, and I occasionally have to take it apart while fishing to fix jams.

Although a decent amount more expensive, for trout, I'd usually suggest beginners get a rod like either the Redington classic trout or the Fenwick aetos paired with a click reel like the reddington zero or something similar. I even have an old plastic scientific anglers click reel I picked up used at a tackle shop for something like $7 that I still use. Unless you need a drag (steelhead, saltwater, etc.) I'd just recommend a click reel as it's basically just a line holder and good disc drag reels are expensive.

Thumbs up for maybe the cheapest possible way to get a full fly fishing setup. That being said, I'm not sure how forgiving or friendly these rods are to cast and I can add that the cross water reel is the worst reel I've ever used. Surprising to hear about the crosswater reel jamming and pinching line! I have one but haven't used it too much (just practice casting) but my buddy borrowed it. Haven't used it in a while since I've been out of it with fishing in general, but never had any complaints or issues with the reel.

Which size reel do you have and what kind of backing do you have on it? I have the 4/5/6 and was able to get 100yds of 20lb Dacron on it no problem.

The path combos are decent - I'd rate them a step above the entry level orvis/bean combos generally. Really good deals here.

For what it's worth, I have the Crosswater 590 combo and have had no issues with it. It gets used a few times a week. I've caught trout, crappie, catfish, panfish, and bass on it and it's handled all of them fine. No complaints for the price!

The big pic of all the rods tell you nothing about them !? Woots problem is very little info about the product. If you don't know about the item already, you probably will not buy, using their descriptions ???

I bought the Path II 590 on a recommendation to get started fly fishing, and it is great for that. After a couple trips with it, I do recommend picking up new line with welded loops.

A few trips in of enjoying my Path, I swapped setups with my buddy($1000+) for a section of the river. It was obviously super nice. When I asked if I really needed to spend that much for a buttery smooth setup, he suggested putting new line in. It was definitely worth it. The welded loops made the line snag less and way easier to change out my leaders on the water(more time fishing less time fighting line), and I felt like my casting/presentation was way better. Damn, I'd jump on this in a second if I hadn't just bought a cheap Wakeman fly combo on Amazon yesterday. I still might, but the one I got was on a heavy discount too so it's still a big bump in price.

590s is the weight and length. 5 weight 9 feet. 5wt is an all around trout rod. It's also a good size for Bass fishing also. 490 = 4 wt 9'. I use a 490 type rod for trout for a lot of local rivers in colorado. Makes small trout seem big and big fish feel gigantic. When I hunt big trout (>20") I use a 5wt to 6wt. The greater the weight the "easier" it will be to land fish. Always keep the trout wet and handle with care unless you are going to eat them. Hope this helps

The Redington Crosswater rods are quite good and a fantastic price on this deal which could be great to expand your rod weight collection, but unless you are looking at a decent starter set, the Polymer Construction Crosswater reels and included line are not that great. The disc drag system in the Crosswater, common in many fly reels, is ok but certainly not a great drag system for anyone but a beginner.

The first number is the weight of the rod and the next two are the length. The number after the dash is showing how many pieces. So a 476-4 is a 4 WT, 7.5' 4-piece rod.
