Pretty apparent to everyone now that the refurb process just consists of wiping the laptop with a damp cloth and reload the ssd with a clean windows install, pack in a box and ship.

Absolutely zero quality control or check of anything else....
Its confusing because for Dell, "Refurb" can mean a lot of different things.

On the 7390 Dell Fedex Refurb I received they had installed an adhesive PVC "Skin" [dellrefurbished.com] on the top to hide dings & scratches. If the one you got looks pretty new on the top but has dings elsewhere then check the edge of the top for the vinyl skin.

These 7390s are off lease laptops that had lots of previous use. But on current model Dells, Refurb can mean a customer return with virtually no previous use. In the case of the Dell 7320 Detachables (threads on SD) they are brand new never used in configurations that are overstocked, and come with 3 year in home PRO Warranties.

Hmm that is quite interesting now that you mentioned it. I was wondering why there is a sticker like thing on top of the lid for all the ones i got. They seem to have been put on quite well except for one that is slightly off. But there is not much of a dent anywhere else anyway.

Absolutely zero quality control or check of anything else aside from making sure the damn thing boots up and accepts the writing of the images onto the ssd.

At least they have been fairly responsive in sending out good batteries. I think we have all so far got replacement batteries with at least 50+Whr out of 60. So if your battery is anything less than 50Wh, it worth asking them for a replacement. Make sure to say your laptop doesn't last more than 90 min of usage on battery.
Technical they didn't make any promise of battery life, so other than visible battery bulging which would be a safety issue, any complimentary battery they send you is just being nice. I see most if not all eBay refurbishers explicitly state the battery may not hold charge and that is not a returnable defect. It is one of the items that you basically have to replace at your own cost. (Also true if you purchase most secondhand cell phones)

Given the datapoint, no matter the original capacity, I'm sure if you complain to them, they will comply with sending a new battery.

It isn't that confusing if you understand the business model. They are completely separate businesses and have different accounting models and even separate corporate entities.

When you make a lease with Dell, Dell financial services is the one that is purchasing the laptop from Dell, and at that point Dell the consumer facing company is no longer the owner of the laptop. Dell can account it as a sale and recognize profit. Dell financial services then handles all of the payment collection, buyout, repossession, and refurbishing. These leases are normally 3 years (laptop equipments are normally replaced on a 3 year schedule in the corporate world), that's why you see most of these refurbished models (on DellRefurbished or on eBay) being 3 year old models. This massive inflow of supply also causes the price to drop a lot, as opposed to 1 year or 2 year old models.

When consumers return a laptop to Dell within its return period, Dell as a retailer has to cancel out the sale and account a small loss in value. They like any other retailer (BestBuy, Walmart) then has to get rid of the product. There are a number of ways including selling it as "refurbished" or "open box". These are normally new models. If stock remains unsold for too long, retailers normally sell them to discount retailers or other parties down the food chain so they no longer have the liability of unsold stock. (For normal good like pens and notebooks in a Walmart for instance, they get sold to Big Lot etc)

Dell.com/Dell Outlet sells the new, open box models. Dell financial services sells the old, leased models.

It appears they do make the promise that all functional parts (which would include the battery) will meet factory specifications. See the Warranty here, there is no battery disclaimer. [dellrefurbished.com]

That was not how it worked for me. Mine came with a smaller 3-Cell 42Wh battery and it showed 29Wh capacity (69% of 42Wh). Dell Refurbished Technical support told me their battery benchmark was a 90 minute runtime, not the capacity or original spec. I contacted them twice, they would not replace it. I had not read the warranty linked above at the time.

It was not worth the hassle for me to argue longer because new aftermarket 60Wh batteries for the 7390 are cheap. But, going forward it is good to know that at least one tech says they promise only 90 minutes run time, and that the posted Dell Refurbished Warranty promises more.

So I checked out the 7320 detachable deal and while that expired, this deal is even better. https://www.ebay.com/itm/30469816...Sw~3ZjbkZJ

7330 2in 1 for $420 with a 3 years warranty's a heck of a deal.

Not sure if they are clamping down on battery claims or the customer service representative is applying the policy inconsistently then. The product page when I ordered did not specify battery capacity.

Since there was no battery exception to the policy, they couldn't exactly refuse anyone. There are probably a ton of people who didn't notice so they got away with not having to replace the batteries on a lot of these. Obviously they could ve sent you another less than 50% battery but it's nice they didn't for several of us.

Having said that, they sent me TWO bad sata m2 ssd for my non2in1 7390. After the 2nd time, i told them to stop wasting time and money and just give me a $20 refund. Which they did and it is a fair deal since i could use that $20 to buy a 256gb ssd.

Anything at least 2400 speed or better is good enough. Check ebay .

Used ddr4 are not much cheaper than new though. You can get a new 16gb 3200 on Newegg and will be able to use that on a lot of other newer laptops later.

For those of you with the 2 in 1, can you spot the problematic power chip on the main board? I opened it up and didn't find it.

It is entirely possible I missed it, but it is also possible the power implementation is different. The 7390 has a barrel plug while the 2 in 1 is USB-C only. The 2 in 1 may not have the same chip as the 7390, which means it may not fail the same way the 7390's do.

I do measure a really hot inductor whenever it charges (with the computer on or off). I'm not too worried about that chip because it should have a rated tolerance of 125C. And if the computer is on, then fan does turn on whenever a plug in connected, even though CPU temp is pretty cool. I don't know what mechanism triggers the fan, even though I noticed no difference before and after connecting the plug in HWMonitor.

I notice these run a bit hotter than the 11th gen intel 1135 that i have in other laptops. but then again, I suspect that a lot of the problems with those laptops might have also related to the way they were constantly being connected to the dock.

But yeah, i do notice also that these 7390 also do run a bit hotter than my lenovo i5 8th gen U laptops too.

on two of the 7390 i got it was sk hynix. 3rd had intel which was crapped with smart error. they sent me another crappy intel ssd with smart error as a replacement. after that i told them to just refund me $20 which they did

doesn't really matter much as long as yr ssd doesn't have smart error or bad block. needs to run something like hd sentinels to check

I just bought a dell 5300 touch and 2in1. The 5300 supposed to look identical to 7390 except using polycarbonate instead of magnesium

The HUGE advantage of 5300 over 7390 is the fact that both the non 2in1 and 2in1 is the fact that both of these have two sodimm slots!

The other difference is that the 2in1 5300 has a barrel connector replacing one of the usb-c

But do you see the problematic chip "FMDF-3035" in the 7390 2 in 1? I know it is in 7390 and 7490 and 5490 and a few other models with the barrel charger, but I didn't find it in the 7390 2 in 1. It gives me hope that the 7390 2 in 1 is actually not affected by the fried chips problem. (It may still overheat but that may be a separate problem)

Even the 5300 2 in 1 has 2 SODIMM slots? That would be awesome! I would have appreciated the ability to go up to 32GB RAM in my laptop. (But too late. I'm in love with my 7390 2 in 1, I can't let go of it now)
