2K lasts a lot longer but it's VERY toxic to spray even if you're wearing a fancier respirator because it's so toxic that it can actually absorb through skin. Technically you're supposed to wear an air fed whole body suit when spraying 2K.

Honestly I'd rather just respray with the cheaper clearcoat once in a while, it's mildly inconvenient but at least there's no risk that you poison yourself.

there's plenty of inexpensive Tyvek suits you can purchase along with a 3M P100 Respirator Cartridge/Filter 60923. Sure it adds up, but I use the respirator when working on other toxic stuff around the house, including heavy duty degreaser to clean the kid's tubs and when spraying chemicals in the yard. But yeah, people get sick really bad from 2k stuff.

The 2k clear coat method is supposed to look great and last quite well. I haven't tried this Meguiar's product, but it seems to have some pretty good reviews. My guess is that it sacrifices some of the quality / longevity in favor of a less toxic, consumer-friendly product. The buff and polish method is probably quicker / easier but won't last as long with no protection. Below is a video that explains both pretty well. Most people use some kind of cutting or polishing compound if going the buffing route instead of clear coat, but some also use toothpaste if working on the cheap.

As for sanding the headlight, I wouldn't worry about thinning the headlight. You're using very fine grit sandpaper (600 or higher) that only takes off a razor thin layer (ideally, just the cloudy coating which is then replaced by the clear coat). You'd really have to go at it for a while before thinninght plastic would really be a concern.

I already have a DA with diff grits of sandpaper and polishing pads, Plastx, Flitz and whatever cutting, polishing crap I have in the garage. Just been procrastinating :-)

What I don't like about the non-2K approach is that you have to sand off your mess (the clear coat that you applied and now looks like crap) within a year.

Yeah, I'm guessing the 2k would probably last longer too. I have in the past just used paint like that outside with a regular mask and also held my breath for the minute or so it takes for something like this. (Waiting to breathe until stepping away / upwind). It's a very small area and not like painting a whole body panel or something. Thin plastic garbage bags or a Dollar Tree rain poncho could also double as a protection suit if concerned about skin contact. (Not recommending that, but different people have different levels of concern about that and you could probably almost make a full protection suit that way if you wanted to.) Smilie

You should be able to just sand lightly with extremely fine sandpaper to remove the discoloration then use this rather than polishing first. The clear coat fills the tiny scratches from the sandpaper, so it should still end up clear and shiny. I think some may just clean the lenses first and not sand, but that probably won't turn out great if the coating is really discolored. I wouldn't be surprised if that's why it gets some bad reviews here and there … just spraying this over horribly discolored lenses that were just wiped down wouldn't help much. Just a good cleaning or light toothpaste buffing first would probably be fine for lenses that aren't too cloudy yet though.

(When I say extremely fine sandpaper, we're talking 1000 to 2000 grit … not just generic hardware store sandpaper that says "very fine" or something like that.)

you guys are making it too complicated.

for 2k clearcoat, there's so little surface, you can just hold your damn breath and finish spraying.

I've stopped using coatings on headlights.
I've discovered it's actually easier to simply use car polish to polish the headlights, then apply wax/sealant. Repeat quickly every 4 weeks.

You never have to strip old coatings and sand shit down; so labor intensive.

Once your factory coating is gone, there's nothing you can do about it aftermarket that lasts worth a damn, so you might as well just use regular polish to buff out the yellow.

This is all I use now....

If you sand down your headlights and spray this on top, you will still see a ton of scratches when the lights are on.
This will not fill the scratches.

I used this few months ago. Did like 4 coats but it's starting to come off now. Next time I'll just use 2k clear coat. Should last much longer

Understood. But then it is just a quick buff once the coating is gone and you have a smooth surface.
I find that once the UV coating wears off the car is 7-12 yrs old and a few years after that, I've sold the car.

You still need to do a mild sanding or cleaning before application. I've done the 3m restoration kit that doesn't come with a coating (it was a cheaper one) and used this afterwards. So far almost half a year later sitting out in the central Florida sun, and headlights still look clear as new. I applied it pretty heavy to the point where there are very light run marks that dried, but barely noticeable. Cleared the headlights for safety mostly, as the car is a daily and has peeling paint anyways. But headlights look great.

Used about half the can, so I'm guessing two applications per set of headlights per can.
