While technically true the 2nd generation is still the latest iteration of that particular model and is still being sold. My guess is this style of AirPods might stay in the lineup as the lowest entry point. Meaning we might have 3 tiers of AirPods as a staple much like we have 4 different options for iPhones, and many more for the watch.
