1) It's based on the original Instinct, which is getting long in the tooth. Tough as nails, has all the basics and good battery life, but at the end of the day…it's still 4 year old tech. Not saying it's not a decent deal, just know that it won't have all the features of the Instinct 2 and that software support for it may trail off a lot sooner than buying a newer model.

2) The "e-sports" branding was a horrible mismatch with a GPS watch that was originally targeted at hikers, backpackers and hunters. Just never caught on.

One thing I was not planning to do today was by a smartwatch.

I just bought a smartwatch.

Damn this site.

Same as the regular instinct. The gaming eSports branding did not appeal to that market. The color is not bad. I love the instinct linen . Only this better would be the solar variant.

So there is an instinct 2 and this is leftover from the instinct. So if you like the idea of a long lasting gps and heart rate monitoring fitness watch, this is it. Not flashy, but functional. I love mine for outdoor recreation like hiking and hunting. I rarely use it for notifications or changing music. It's nice to see that a person is calling and more.

A friend of mine bought a bunch of Garmin Instinct Solar edition for boys scouts team that went on some expedition. If I am right, solar edition has SpO2 sensor. Garmin put too many variants of instinct model out there and may be confusing a lot! There is a latest Instinct Gen 2 with improved specs

BuyDig Ebay also selling Forerunner 45 (certified refurbished) for same price. If like me you can't decide between the two, this comparison may help:

$100 is an amazing value for what you get. Yes it's old but I've had my instinct for 2.5 years and it's been amazing.

How is this for sleep monitoring? $100 for a decent sports watch is a dea.

The most important feature missing in this watch is the live tracking, in case something happens to you out in a trail the live track can help your family member or EMS locate you, wanted to get this watch for a long time, regret not getting the solar edition on Amazon prime day or from Costco when they dropped to $200. Decisions decisions this for $99 or wait for the solar to drop to $199 again and I think the solar has the updated sensor so has SPO2/V02 Max

I have the non-esport version which is the same other than coloring. I've had it for 3 years and it has lasted the longest for me of any type of fitness watch. I charge it maybe once a week or every other week. It has survived accidentally wearing it during scuba diving, several drops, scrapes, etc. I shut off most app notifications to it except for voice calling and my text messages. I like to glance at it and see who is calling or see when I get a text message from my wife or one of the kids. Replies are limited to quick replies you pre-define, which originally was annoying but once I built my list of common responses it works out well and is streamlined.

The only difference I'm aware of between this version and the newer one is the solar powered aspect which makes the battery last even longer. Since I'm near an electrical source at least every two weeks the solar aspect is nice to have but not necessary. If this one was broken or failing, I would buy this deal in a heartbeat.

For anyone comparing with the newer instinct, here's Garmin's comparison of the Instinct 2, the deal watch, and the non-esports Instinct 1. I also threw the Foerunner 45 in there since its the only other Garmin I've seen selling for around $100 (Although they were all refurbs, IIRC):

The newer model is definitely an upgrade, but IMO this is a screaming deal at $100.

The major difference between the new and old model are longer batter life, Oxygen Meter, running metrics. In other words, if you are a runner the newer model is better and may be worth the additional price. But if you are a hiker or engage in mixed activities this is one is a much better value.

One thing to consider is that you may be buying a watch with a 4 year old battery.

That's my primary concern, as battery life would probably start to drop off quickly with use if these are new old stock. Brand new the battery life is already half the instinct 2, and if they are older production it likely won't hold the 14 day charge life for very long.

In theory these batteries should last 500-1000 charge cycles or at least five years. But a battery that has been sitting around for four years, in who knows what conditions, could have easily already lost 25% of its capacity and possibly more depending on how it has been stored.

So its possible that within two years it might need charging every day.

At this price point I don't think it makes it a deal breaker but people buying it should be realistic about what they are getting. This is not a "brand new" watch even if it "brand new".

Edit: I should add that Garmin's warranty, which is one year, explicitly excludes battery replacement.

double edit: It might be wroth consider buying from Garmin's Amazon store. It is $20 more there but I suspect you might get a more recent build date than those from a third party seller.

Is there a backlight or something similar? Last memory LCD watch I had was a Pebble a long time ago.
Yes there's a backlight that can be turned on with any button or with a flick of your wrist
