The reviews are bad. Has anyone purchased this that may be able to help on whether the savings is worth the hassle to get this working?
GamersNexus ranked the Aorus Pro the best Z690 board in its price range. The Pro and the Ultra are basically the same except Ultra has better power phases. I personally have Z690 Aorus Xtreme, I'm very happy with it. Some older stock may need to update the BIOS to make the RAM work. The Z690 Aorus Pro/Ultra/Master/Xtreme motherboards are pretty solid.

The Aorus Master is also on sale for 300 and was thinking about going with that. Any input on that?

DO NOT BUY THIS Hardware Faulty DEFECTIVE GARBAGE.
This mother board has PCIe Gen4 slot issue. Black screen, unstable. slow and more.
It doesn't work even if you change PCIe Gen4 mode to Gen3 mode at BIOS menu.
There are two models of Ultra.
GIGABYTE Z690 AORUS ULTRA: Defective garbage. Hardware fault. This motherboard.
GIGABYTE Z690 AORUS ULTRA PLUS: It doesn't have this issue.

I believe this issue was only on the mini-itx boards (Z690i). This is the atx board.
I believe most of the bad reviews are either due to having to update the bios before it worked or because of RAM issues with early adopters that I believe are now figured out

This is an incorrect statement. The PCIe 4 issue was with the mini-itx Ultra boards, not the regular ATX boards. There is no Ultra Plus version of the ATX board.
I purchased the ITX Aorus MB and I had to return it due to the PCIe issue. It took more than a month to get my money back (a check) and customer service seemed really lazy (or maybe overworked from processing so many returns).
I will not buy anything from this manufacturer again.

yeah that is only with Z690i which has been fixed.
I have this board it it works well out of the box. My only gripe is it doesnt like Teamgroup DDR5 6000+

Fwiw i have a flawless gigabyte mobo from 2011, still works great. Supposedly only a mini itx board issue, gigabyte boards known to be solid.
Asrock mobos on the other hand, i wouldnt touch with a 10 foot pole.

I successfully ran some memtest at given XMP 6000 but would often crash in games. Lowering to 5600 helped with games.
With further bios update, I am sure it will be compatible in no time.
