NJ Transit is offering Buy 1, Get 1 Free Transit Tickets when you follow the instructions listed below.

Instructions:
  1. Get started by downloading the NJ Transit Mobile App
  2. Set up an account in the App
  3. Select 4 One-Way tickets and tap "Proceed to Checkout"
  4. Enter the promotional code FALLFRIENDS
  5. Tap your payment method of choice and purchase the tickets
  6. Your tickets will appear in the "My Tickets" section of the App
  7. Activate both tickets before boarding the train or bus

So I used one ticket in the morning (while on the way to work) and another ticket in the evening (while returning home) and I still have 2 tickets which I can activate and only used tickets have expired and unselected tickets are still available for activation!!

And of course I waited for a day to post this reply after checking the status post 00:00 hours

Today I used and activated only one ticket and showed it to the conductor. The other 3 tickets are yet to be activated

I really don't see how they could implement this in the app without a lot of modification (separate ticket type etc) to mee they just look like 4 individual tickets

Yeah, it will have some server side implementations. APP is just a GUI, a lot of information will be hidden. But you are right, they should point it out in the APP, otherwise it just tricks customers who do not read terms carefully.

I also see many other promotions with the same terms (check the Atlantic City one)

Yes. As long as you are traveling the same route and can produce the ticket if asked. They don't check once they stick the ticket stub in front of your seat.
