Born and raised 15 min outside NYC and glad to be out, but Warren and Sussex counties have a lot of beautiful areas. Lots of state parks, farmland, etc. The taxes will forever keep me on the other side of the border though.
So where are you now?

Buy the paper tickets. 50% of the time the conductor doesn't even collect them. I have a stack which never expire and use them for personal travel.

FYI. NJ transit has run this BOGO every quarter for the last year or so. Every time, you just 4 one ways and can activate them one at a time (do not need to bring a friend). Just be aware they do expire but as long as you're doing a round trip, you may as well buy it since your next round trip is effectively free.

I don't know what lines you use but on the trains I've taken, the conductors collect tickets about 95% of the time. Always non-rush hour though and I guess they have more time to collect them. On the other hand, during pandemic times they RARELY collected tickets.

You should be able to return those tickets (via the app), then rebuy with the code.
