I noticed the USA Today article you quoted for this, certainly not a random Internet source. While I am by no means an air purifier expert, I got lost geeking out on this stuff earlier this summer when I became frustrated with some of the games and wording differences the vendors use. For example, they will toss out a random sq.ft rating, but they each seem to pick different room air change rates. To address this, I built out calculations to compare industry-standard CADR rates as an accurate way to actually compare air purifiers.

For the two air purifiers mentioned, the DustMagnet 5210i seems be significantly less efficient than the Winix C545 per below where simply speaking, higher is better (and if someone does consider themselves an expert on this and want to educate me more, please!):

CADR Dust
DustMagnet 5210i CFM:133
Winix C545 CFM:245
DustMagnet 5210i M3/hr: 226.1
Winix C545 M3/hr: 413.1

CADR Smoke
DustMagnet 5210i CFM:137
Winix C545 CFM:246
DustMagnet 5210i M3/hr: 232.9
Winix C545 M3/hr: 418.2

CADR Pollen
DustMagnet 5210i CFM: 140
Winix C545 CFM: 232
DustMagnet 5210i M3/hr: 238
Winix C545 M3/hr: 394.4

I have a blueair purifier. It runs 24/7 and is merely white noise. For the few times in years it has been off for a few days, I can tell the difference in air quality.

My suggestion is to buy one that's rated at a higher square footage than the room this will be sitting in. Since it will be overpowered, you can run it on low and get the minimum amount of noise while enjoying great purification.

The Winix C545 is rated for 360 sq ft is HEPA and on sale for $99 right now at Costco with an extra set of filters included in the price. That's an amazing deal.

As mentioned earlier Costco has the dustmaget for $200 with an extra set of filters which cost $50 so maybe a slightly better price at costco with a better return policy.

A review that compares the dustmaget to a different winix model, the 5500 says

The Blueair Dustmagnet has a faster rate of clearing out particulate matter, such as allergens. The Winix is still pretty good at clearing particulates, but isn't as fast as the Blueair. On the other hand, the Winix is much better than the Blueair at dispersing volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

If you're mostly concerned about allergies, the Blueair Dustmaggnet 5410i is one of the best air purifiers you can buy. If you're looking for more of an all-arounder, or if you work with paint, varnish and other materials that release ample VOCs, the Winix is for you

Just chatted with Costco online CSR and this is what I was told "It does look like it comes with a filter inside, and then an extra filter to switch out." So not sure what it really comes with.

The carbon filters in the winix will not effectively remove VOCs - you need pounds of it, especially if you're looking to capture VOCs for more than a few days, if it even lasts that long. Besides, you could always just order a roll and cut to fit for this model and achieve the same result as the winix
Why do that if it only lasts a couple days though?

Someone needs to buy one and report back if you get two sets of filters.

This was going to be my question. My previous research on air purifiers pushed me aware from Blueair because of the ozone. This was tempting but haven't researched the model to confirm if the same is the case. I ended up with a Coway AirMega 400S last time I was in the market.
This is untrue. All of my Blueairs are just filters with fans.

I like my Blueair 211 for basic air circulation and it seems to catch a fair bit of dog hair and dust on the outer washable pre-filter.

Blueair's website acknowledges ozone emissions. They claim the ozone from their purifiers is at a low enough level to not not harmful.

Difficult to understand square footage ratings when alot of new homes are open floor plans. Doesnt dust just migrate to your clean area
A smaller air purifier can still filter a larger than rated room, it will simply do it more slowly and you're less likely to notice any moving air. I programmed my Nest thermostat to run the HVAC fan 15mins/hour overnight to help keep the whole home filtering.

Nope. You need adequate ventilation if you're looking to reduce co2 levels. Get a sensor to test levels over the course of a few days…you might be shocked by how much builds up
Plants love CO2. I'm not sure how many you'd need to clean your air. AirThings has a few sensors that include CO2 tracking.

Maybe you're creating particulate faster than it can filter it?

Do you have pets?

When in doubt, always go larger than the sqft of the room.
I didn't know you could see the air when the particulates are so small in microns

You can ride your bicycle from Florida to California it'll be slower but I don't think you'd want to do it it was not made for that
He will overwork the fan shorten filter life and hence never get the results

Nooo not the Winix. My dad has a lot of breathing problems so we have a few of these throughout the house (as he loves Costco and buys everything from there). Every one of them makes a horrible loud whining noise. I could see one of them being noisy but all of them? That aside I will note that they do a good job otherwise and catch a ton of dust and pet hair and such. The price is good so if you aren't too bothered by house noisy it is then it's good.

How old are the winix? I think the winix fans start making extraneous noise after 2-3 years. But if you buy from Costco you can return them. I've had some winix for about a year and they are virtually silent.

Good call!
Costcos model # looks different. Do you know if they are different in any way?
I called blueair directly. They said Costco model is the same as the 5410i. Only difference is the model number because Costco wants their own version.

Also asked if it comes with additional filters. They said NO, only comes with 1 set of filter.

I keep getting this message "Your order could not be submitted. Please review your payment settings and try again. Thank you for your patience!"

I've tried different credit cards and different browsers. Is anybody else having this problem?

Had the same issue. Call blueair directly and they can place the order for you. They said they increased the security level on the website, so it might be blocking your order from going through.
