Just a reminder that this is SATA, not NVME. With that said, I know that some older laptops have m.2 slots that only support SATA, and with SATA m.2 drives getting more rare, this is a pretty good opportunity.

Just a reminder that this is SATA, not NVME. With that said, I know that some older laptops have m.2 slots that only support SATA, and with SATA m.2 drives getting more rare, this is a pretty good opportunity.

hardest find for me recently was a 2242 SATA drive. Seems like the only brands making that size have names like DogFish, GamerKing, KingSpec, SharkSpeed, KingShark.. no thanks.

then there's Newegg who wants over $400 for a Lenovo 512GB.. insanity.

I wish that was true but there's still lots of new low end i3/5 laptops that only support sata and not nvme... Will grab a few to upgrade those 128gb sticks.

Stick with FishSpeed and DogSpec, you'll be fine...

I second this. Right now I don't need one but my thinkpad x1 from 2015 won't boot from nvme, needs this special sata type drive. I don't know if I should invest $30 to it at this point or just ignore it tho.

if the ssd in the thinkpad is working just fine, then probably not necessary. but maybe one thing you can do with another drive is install chrome os flex (since thinkpad x1 is in the supported list) or linux (ubuntu, mint) on it and get more use out of it, especially after windows 10 expires. and just keep the old drive as backup just in case.

Thanks but in that case why not just buy the full size SATA ssd instead of this m.2 size?
At least the full size SSD will fit any laptop right?

you can buy something like this to either upgrade an existing m.2 sata ssd with much less capacity or populate an empty m.2 sata slot (if you know you have one) to increase your storage. it just depends on what slots you have available on your laptop.

many modern laptops (especially thin ones) seem to only come with m.2 slots these days (and focus on nvme instead of sata), so i would buy a compatible ssd for your specific laptop & needs, instead of buying an ssd that you may or may not be able to transplant into other laptops.
