Back in the day, I had subscriptions to Sound & Vision, Home Theater Mag, Stereophile etc. I'm familiar w/ the methods used to analytically measure/quantify specs and throw "real world" scenarios at a receiver. Basic concepts like quality toroidal transformers, individual amp modules w/ dedicated power supplies, shielding, thicker gauge cases etc. do make a difference to an extent. It's what the Pioneer Elite, Sony ES and higher Denon/Marantz models employed, for their $1k+ models.

As w/ any subjective opinions, such as wine or other things, if it's good to you, that's all that matters. As some have noted, wattage/power is relevant as far sound pressure levels relating to the efficiency of your speakers and the size of your room. If you're in an apartment/condo, no sense in trying to create theater-level sound levels. Good enough is good enough.

My rants are simply an effort to point out to anyone interested, the value proposition of recent models and where they focus, and whether the value is there for some but not for others. If it's a fit, buy it.

The price listed in the thread. Unfortunately, I didn't count. I recall there being a decent stack of them. But that was 3 days ago

For those wondering, I'm a Yamaha guy and went through 3 then got the Denon. Denon blows it out of the water.

Debating getting one of these. I have a denon from like early 2000s doing optical audio out to Andrew Jones speakers. Got a 77" oled too so feels should
Upgrade audio but it's sounded and worked fine for me and no issues for the handful of years I've had it second hand. Thoughts?

Great price but still if what I got already works…. I know there's better audio formats than DD5.1 now on blu rays and UHD but isn't lots of stream service apps DD5.1 max still?
select titles on Netflix, HBO, Disney+ and Amazon prime will stream with Atmos, which is really only better than 5.1 if you have height speakers. I use this amp with a 5.1.2 setup and really like it for the price. (streaming services not listed may support Atmos, but I don't know, I don't think Hulu or Paramount do, I think Apple might, no clue about discovery).

THey had about 20 at the downtown Kansas City Costco as of this morning. Purchased. Now have this and the Onkyo both NIB, but need to pick one for the new home theater room... Both have pros / cons.

There's an app for this receiver that allows you to calibrate and modify the eq curves for all speakers in your system - Audyssey MultEQ. It's for advanced users, and most users won't benefit from it, which is probably why they charge $20 for it.

Can someone educate me on the value proposition for recent AV receivers? They seem to focus on apps, passing/processing video and the latest codecs for 15 speakers or whatever. If you run your cable/bluray directly to your TV, you don't need your receiver to "process" it. If you use your TV as the streamer source for music, you don't need your receiver to also do it. Most people don't want, can't fit 7+ speakers in a setup. I have no interest in mounting speakers to my ceiling and several along the walls (maybe it's just me).

So for basic sound quality & performance, this receiver puts out 75W per channel, which I'd say is pretty anemic. Since it's supposed to be for 7 channels, perhaps that's plenty, but for those wanting to toggle to stereo listening with nicer tower speakers up front, this won't cut it.

I'd much prefer the earlier Denon AVR receivers that focused on their amplification and put out 130+ watts to 5 or 7 channels, and stopped at the lossless codecs, rather than this Atmos silliness.
This receiver is rated for 4 ohm load but you have to manually set the impedance to lower the supply voltage at the main filter capacitors. Therefore, the output devices and heat sink are just average quality. The UL power rating is 400W. That would translate to about 260W total continuous output if the efficiency is 65%.
For optimum performance, input the video source directly into the TV. There is no pre-outs for the main and center channels. This should not be a problem for an average room with speakers rated at +89dB sensitivity. A more robust amplification section would be ideal. Unfortunately, most mainstream consumer products today are geared toward bells and whistles.

The frequency response for each speaker changes with different seating position. Pick speakers that sound good to you, rather than trying to equalize them to achieve flat frequency response. Objects in the room and the shape of the room can dramatically alter the frequency response.

Went to three different Costcos today on my drive from Santa Clara to Sacramento. Third times the charm. Finally found it at the Reynolds's Ranch Pkwy Costco in Lodi 😅
