These have low power CPUs, so there's not going to be much performance difference year to year between new generations. Highly recommended if you're looking to buy a Surface Laptop. These come with new batteries that are potentially replaceable (if you're adventurous), while the SL4's are not. SSD can be upgraded, but not RAM.

Also it is called Surface Laptop 3. Surface Laptop is a product line and it isn't meant to be separated like "Surface 3 laptop". There is also Surface Book 3 and Surface Pro 3 and Surface Go 3 which are all different product lines.

The CPU is probably the *bare minimum* CPU spec for a laptop today (its somewhere between a 8250u and a 1035 g4...basically the bottom floor for a quad-core CPU). The laptop is just over two years old, but the form factor does feel premium and "Apple-y" with its weight and density. It is about the same speed and specs as the Motile from late 2019 (GPU is ever so slightly faster).
I personally really like the surface ergonomics (the SP4 was my daily for several years). Responsive keyboard and smooth trackpad. However, I have PTSD from the "screen scramble" on my SP4.
The memory is enough (but just barely) for a casual user without the need to gut the OS and app drawer to run everything barebones. However, the depressing part is how the small memory pool will neuter anything that the integrated graphics can do.
Cons: Battery life is just ok, lasts about 4ish hrs depending on what I'm doing. CPU/Ram not the fastest but just fine for non gaming use. Has some weird dimming issues (brighter then darker etc.) moving between different webpages when I'm sitting in the dark and the backlight is in the lowest setting. That's it.
Pros: Feels way more premium than any other under $400 laptop I've ever felt. Screen is awesome, touchscreen works great, keyboard feels nice, track pad works as it should. Backlit keys are a nice touch as is the metal body. No issues browsing the web even while having 15 different tabs open. My favorite thing, as I mentioned earlier, is the screen ratio. Love how I can read an article or browse Slickdeals and not have to feel like I'm always scrolling up and down constantly. Would absolutely buy again.
