But there is too much unwarranted kvetching from people about this as if they are all trying to scam.
There are legitimate reasons for changing components. Supply chain issues, availability of the type of component they are using, better components coming along, cost pressures, etc. A lot of them don't make much of a difference in performance or reliability. These kinds of changes happen in PSUs too.
Customers think why don't they just change the model name or number. This is where customers don't understand the costs and logistics involved in changing a model name or number. A lot of the packaging/labeling would already be printed. Retailers are averse to creating new SKUs with almost identical products, there are contractual obligations for supply, etc. So, the question then becomes at what point is it really a new product… it is a judgment call for the manufacturer.
The easiest would be some kind of a change in Serial number or model number or with version 2,3 etc. This is done with routers and PSUs all the time. Reputable manufacturers do this at the minimum.
Samsung did this for the 970 Evo Plus and even changed the packaging from horizontal to vertical graphics.
PNY changed the serial number format for the reduced TBW.
It doesn't do anyone any good by lumping all of these types of changes together and considering all of them scams.
If manufacturers should be faulted as an industry, it should be for the lack of transparency in specs and component changes even if minor. Even denoting this in product sheets or web pages so people who review can judge whether it should be retested or not.
