So no one gets confused by the naming structure... this model is limited to 1080p - it is not capable of 4K output.
Should be $49 for 1080p.
It's an A8. 4k model is A12.

Latest Apple chip is A16 so the one in this ATV HD model is 8 years old.

The point again was this was not only 1080p which isn't that terrible imo but the chip is too old to even provide a great 1080p experience. I have the ATV from about 8 years ago on one of my plasma tvs (same A8) and it is kind of slow. So even if I just wanted a 1080p experience I would buy the 4k model.

Granted I would wait until a sale at this point as rumors of a new model have been flying and retailers were dumping the 4k for $110-$120 during the late summer. ...

I don't get it, what's the point of Apple TV if it doesn't include the Apple TV streaming service: you still have to pay the monthly cost for the streaming service right?

Yeah, doesn't make any sense. I bought Comcast modem and they gave me free internet because I asked them what the point of making modems but no internet.

It's a streaming service box like a Roku, Google TV, Nvidia Shield, Firestick etc...... But has a much better processor than most and full apple integration so it works with apple homekit, iphones and iphone screencasting, as well as Airpod headphone integration.

None of the other boxes come with free Netflix or whatever, so I'm not sure how you're making that assumption that it should come with free Apple TV+.

Should be $25, given there is a deal for a 4k roku for $25.

Not having either, is there anything "good" for this apple device for a regular user who uses the youtubes and hulu?

Have fun. I fell for people's comments here on how much better apple tv is than roku and it's had issue after issue after issue since day one of opening it. Locked up apps, suddenly chipmunk voices in the audio, and now the latest is it constantly loses the network connection when the network iss till fine and it won't let it re4coonect automatically to a hidden network. The roku sometimes locked up and had to be unplugged and plugged back in, otherwise no issues with that one.

You got a bad one, I'd return it for a replacement.

I've had 4 Apple tv's since the original Apple TV 4 back in 2018. I've never had a single one of your issues.

The only issue is sometimes Netflix won't open and I have to clear out the ram by double clicking the monitor button and swiping out all the other apps. Here's a video that shows you how: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CzMxX7DZ40A

If you have an iPhone, the Apple Tv is better for youtube because you can cast videos to it.

For Android users, you're probably better off with the Roku, though the Ultra is usually on sale for $50 during black friday. That's a better buy because it has dolby vision and atmos, as well as a faster processor.

I had it sitting here sealed for months and months before opening, so couldn't return. So my plan is to report it right before the 1 year date because I didn't want to be forced to get a refurbished one right off the bat from the day I opened it. I heard sometimes they will send you a new one, but I'd not be that lucky.

Another thing it does is if I keep touch enabled I can't ever click on anything because when I get it to the option i want to click and move my finger onto the click button it moves again!

I've heard of people having issues with the trackpad, but it's never been an issue for me because I've used trackpads on laptops for 2 decades. The only thing different is you use your thumb instead of your pointy finger.

Yup, I totally concur. There are certainly nice things about Roku which I like (the price, especially). That said, as far as performance goes, the apple tv is just in another league of its own. I mentioned this in another comment, but even the apple tv HD still stands above or matches most, if not probably all, of the latest Roku devices in terms of speed and responsiveness. (I had compared the apple tv HD with the roku express 4k+)

Obviously the extra speed isn't really necessary, but it's just really nice to have.
why would i need apple tv if i already can use the apple tv app on my roku tcl 4k tv?

The apple tv device is something totally different from the apple tv app. Why are they named the same? I have no idea. Does this cause unnecessary confusion? Yes.

The apple tv app is specifically for viewing content from the apple ecosystem. For example, viewing paid apple tv+ content. (apple tv+ is the name of apple's streaming service) You can get the apple tv app on many devices. Rokus, androids, iphones, ipads, etc.

The apple tv device is just a device you plug into your tv. Some features I can think of off the top of my head include:
-It has an app store with a huge selection of apps. For example, youtube, netflix, amazon prime video, apple tv (the app), pluto tv, cbs, nbc, abc, espn, iptv, plex etc.
-It has a large selection of games (popular with kids).
-It can also link up with smart home devices. For example, you can link up security cameras, smart speakers, etc and see & control them all from the apple tv.
-It also has voice control. (rokus have this as well)
-It can also wirelessly connect to things like airpods so you can watch shows while others are sleeping, for example. Quite handy.
-It's fast. The hardware is kind of overkill when compared to most of the competition.

If your smart tv already does everything you need, then, yes, there is no need to buy a separate device to plug into your tv. People generally buy these devices because their tv doesn't have the features they need or doesn't have the performance they want, etc. (A common example is when someone has an older tv)

Not worth the price even at $80. I have the previous Apple TV HD with same chip and it's definitely showing it's age. The A8 is an ancient chip and Apple should be ashamed of themselves for still selling a product with it in 2022.

Others have said the opposite. What do you find slow?

I bought two. One for the garage tv, one for the backyard. Don't need the 4K for those. Thanks op.
