Bought something like this about a month ago and thought I got a great deal. About a week in the screen got a line across it. Also, the sound blows. "Tuned by thx" but definitely not made by anyone reputable.

Nope. There's no BIOS option for it. A software remap is almost completely possible, but the F5 key is missing a function to remap.

Looks like Gateway (the brand) is bought by Taiwanese Acer, so these are Acer's notebooks. Acer has been in the computer market for decades.

For a long time they didn't. Some Chinese company called Bmorn Technology was granted permission from Acer (they own the Gateway branding) to sell electronics with the Gateway name at Walmart. Gateway is only found at Walmart from what I've seen.
