Many people use Plex or similar software to store a video library on their NAS and then show it on various devices (TVs, Rokus, etc.), which have different capabilities about what they can playback. Plex relies on an Intel-specific set of instructions called "QuickSync" to transcode files for devices that aren't able to play back the native format that the file is stored in. This reduces the amount of load on the CPU, but AMD has not implemented the same set of instructions, nor is Plex willing to support AMD's version.

The good news is, this is rapidly becoming a non-issue because the file formats have settled down and playback devices are becoming capable of playing back more and more native file formats. The problem is for people who are using "smart TV" apps which are rarely supported, often broken during updates, and in any case are seriously limited. The answer to me is "buy a streaming box, don't rely on the TV," but I can see why people are salty.

At any rate, your use case doesn't seem like it would be affected and you should go ahead and buy it if you want.

No hardware transcoding with this model due to CPU being an AMD Ryzen.

This seems a good deal, so I am surprised there are no comments yet. Am I mistaken?

I would have bought last years model at this price, but now they killed hardware transcoding by going to AMD.

Just want to add you need a Plex Pass (subscription) to use this feature.

We can hope but this is a 2022 model, so unlikely that will happen soon. You'd need to go with a 920+. Honestly, IMHO, QNAP has a much better lineup if you're looking for transcoding.

I have a stand-alone NUC for my Plex server, so no hardware transcoding isn't a problem for me, but I've already got two Synology devices in the DS form factor. Hopefully a Rackstation device goes on sale soon, but it seems the newer ones are a bit of a disappointment

I'm also looking for the same, from what I've read about the Synology rack mounted devices they require proprietary synology HDDs which seems totally asinine.
