Almost $17/tb not a good deal

WD has a sale going on now, add it to your cart and wait a bit (or sign up for newsletter for first timers) and get either 10% or 15% off, activate the paypal deal for 12% back and you can get some killer deals well below $15/tb

FWIW - I have 4 of these drives and 4 of the WD RED 8 tb drives in the same NAS. My own observations...
  1. These Toshiba drives are slightly louder than the WD reds.
  2. They run about 5-7 degrees cooler than the WD reds. Average temp is about 37-40C on these. While WD Reds in the same server average about 45-47C.
  3. These seem a bit faster than the WD Reds on R/W speeds. Just slightly. Both the Toshiba and WD reds are connected to the same HBA card.

Your own experience may vary depending on other factors.

but Toshiba is better than WD in average. It worth the extra for running 1-2 years longer.

according to toshiba the N300 has a 3 yr warranty so right on par with the WD Red Plus
I'd have to go back and look at backblaze's statistics on which lasts longer to see, but just out of mfg warranty the Red Pro deal is better (longer warranty for cheaper)

Edit:
If you want to nerd out, here's last years backblaze report
https://www.backblaze.com/blog/ba...-for-2021/

There's a line-graph that shows Annual Failure Rate, and Seagate SUCK!, but toshiba, wdc and HGST are similar with HGST edging the other two out (fairly consistently)

The 10% removes the sale price and the 15% is not guaranteed.

Can hook this HDD up to any motherboard that supports SATA? I assume to see all 8TB does not require a modern controller? I run a FreeNas system on a 2016 ASRock Q1900M mobo. TIA

Hard drives over 2TB was an issue back in 2012/2013 as far as I can remember. Your board should be fine.

3 year warranty is fine, but am I the only one that expects these to work for much longer? If it fails in the first 3 years, I'd be concerned for the brands reputation.

What's the expected lifespan of drives nowadays?

I've got some HGST and WD Red's (old ones before the plus/pro nomenclature) 2&3TB drives that were well past 7 years and kept chugging. They were only replaced because of the prices of large drives dropped quite a bit.

For me, its more about knowing that i'm covered for 5 years, no questions asked. Everything will be fine for much past that, but its nice knowing a replacement drive is a quick RMA away.

I had these in two of them i. my editing machines, and had to replace them because they were too noisy.

Have a WD Red 6Tb thats dying (SMART errors) QNAP said change it for a similar size/speed/brand drive, its lasted over 5 yrs as home photo/video/music duo so cant really complain
The red run slow and so dont use much power 5400rpm/vs this at 7200 rpm so yes will be louder
If I needed something more real time/faster Id go with these and replace the other wd red in the qnap but not sure Id need to spend another $30 and replace a drive that still has life in it (its 5 yr old so probably another year if I lucky
