In most environments, the primary cause of data loss isn't hardware failure, but user error or another problem (logical disk corruption; accidentally over-writing data, etc). For example, if you accidentally delete some files from your primary drive, in a RAID (mirrored or parity) configuration, the change would commit almost immediately. In a backup scenario (where you use a script or other tool to periodically copy data), you could just use the backup copy. Furthermore, with backups, you can keep many generations of past data; it's all too common to realize you've deleted or over-written something a week or two later, and RAID won't help you get that back. There are potential performance benefits of some RAID configurations, but that's also probably not appropriate for most home use purposes. Also, keep in mind that the more drives you have in a parity-based RAID array, the LESS protected it is (because of the risk of a double-fault). There are other issues, too, like the NAS itself or disk controller/computer being a single point-of-failure.
Unless people are using their at-home NAS devices for other things (like runnning various thin server applications), I think they'd be best-served by using backup methods and online/off-site backups (where possible). Also, on very large drives, think about what data is really important and can't easily be replaced. In most cases, things like games and applications can easily be downloaded again. I hope this helps.

Still, you should buy from WD and not Amazon because WD will ship it to you in two days, while Amazon, even with Prime, gives the earliest delivery for Oct 30th!!!
Amazon really gone downhill, especially for shoppers in New York City
