After its paired too. But under Settings app the warranty shows really weird.
I bought the first gen the day they came out at full price. If I sell them on eBay used today I can get ~$70 after fees. Three years of usage for net $180 for three years. That's $5/mo and I use them probably ~10hr a day. Probably the best bang for buck apple product I've ever purchased.
