A lot of athletic clothing is made of polyester blends (see Nike Dri-FIT and Adidas Climacool) due to the moisture-wicking and quick-drying properties. Cotton absorbs moisture and gets sticky/heavy.
I have these Amazon Basics performance shorts. They're more than adequate for gym use.

Maybe you aren't aware of the difference between natural fibers and plastic ?
Natural fibers wick perspiration away, are absorbent rather than repellent, and if you happen to be in the culinary arts or other trades, where wearing highly flammable clothing can be a hazard. Well, then you might want to know.
However, if you don't mind wearing clothes made out of the same substance as trash bags, then fine. Have at it.
Except natural fibers do not wick perspiratio
n away at all in comparison to synthet. They ho
ld moisture next to you skin and disperse it poorly, making it take even longer to evaporate.
The only real advantage of natural fibers is possibly the softness/cushion and the lower flammability.
That being said, I don't usually consider flame retardation qualities when I'm picking a pair of shorts to lounge around my house.
